Even better: ask friends/family for ripped ones. Maybe tell them what you need them for, so you don't come off as a weirdo.
Btw. they're also a great way to dye easter eggs: collect pretty herbs in the garden, dip them in water (makes them "stick" better) and place on an undyed egg. Carefully place piece of stocking/tights around it and pull as tight as you can knot both ends as tightly around the egg as possible and then place in dying (spelling?)solution of choice. Once you take it out and open it up, you'll have the outlines of the herb on the egg. If you can manage to open the knot without cutting ("half knot"), you can reuse for the next egg. Rinse it first.

You can also use thin strips from an old T-shirt and you won't have to buy anything!

Hose also works well to tie together the tops of pyramid cedars and shrubs that want to separate to the sides.

Works with old/mismatched socks just as well!

This is a very old trick! The reason fabric is better than twine is that either on trees or plants it won’t wear the bark off or damage centre leaders when the wind blows them around. It’s nice to see a younger gardener using the tried & true rather than the latest fad. 🙂

I’d love to see a tour of your outdoors property.

NEVER PUT A KNOT LIKE THAT. ALWAYS KNOT IT LIKE A SHOELACE.
Also you can use strips of tshirts which are old too. It's only important to use cloth which is elastic in nature.

My dad was a residential painting contractor, and he always used hose to filter paint before putting in a sprayer.

In Florida I saw hose ties holding orchids to trees.

Heard the Amish put them over ripening fruits and vegetables to keep critters off - they’ll encounter hosiery instead of edible skin. From squash to tomatoes to watermelon.

Tip 2: Make a little 8 with the string in order to seperate the plant and the pole. Don't put them in the same loop.

I also saw someone wrapping their beefsteak tomatoes or fruits with pantyhoses to prevent critters and birds from eating them :D

I’ve also used hose but tied it in a figure eight to keep it from rubbing on the support!
