I just lost my pet tarantula of 24 years. She was a Mexican Rose Hair. Her name was Ethel and she was very sweet and “ playful “. 🙏🏽😢

That was an impressive tarantula, one of the largest males of that species I’ve ever seen. It was so cool to see how calm he was while you handled him, definitely a good display of how inoffensive they can be. Looking forward to finding some tarantulas together in the near future. Great work Spencer!

I've said it once and I'll say it again. I've always found tarantulas to be cuddly. They aren't inherently going to attack you (or even throw hairs at you after they calm don a bit) because you're a little too big to be prey. Based on that male's size I'd estimate he's got one more good molt before he expires which is sad because he gorgeous.

Great timing this past monday in southern california me and my friend came across a tarantula as well for the first time up close! What an amazing animal to see in real life🔥

It’s important to emphasize that they are still wild animals and could very easily bite you even with no signs of aggression. Yes, in many cases you could handle one without getting bitten but you need to be calm, slow, and gentle. And it helps if they are in a good mood. Temperament can vary for each tarantula within a “docile” species.

Tarantula whisperer!
You calmed that boy down quick. He was sure mad at first.
Perfect specimen for sure.

I love tarantulas. I used to find them scary before I knew how slow and dumpy they are. Now they're super cute to me :)

I’ve held one once just to get over my fear and they do have the weirdest toes! There’s tiny claws on the bottoms which help them grip (I think)

This is a great channel. Seeing our local wildlife get some attention is a bit surreal. Our own Steve Irwin or Jeff Corwin for the South with a good focus on invertebrates. Keep it up!

I used to love catching tarantulas as a kid. We'd put them in jars & take them home to the aquarium. I took one to school once for show-and-tell. Everyone freaked. lol
As for the scorpions here well, those suckers hurt!! Stepped on one in the shower one night before bed. Felt like FIRE!!

As a Swiss, many parts of the USA, such as this forest, always looked similar-ish enough to my home-forests that I assumed the bug-life would also be similar-ish. I never thought there would be scorpions and these huge spiders there. We have very little big spiders and insects. Thank god ;D
