When people talk about cars for sale in Japan it seems the focus is around fast performance cars. Don't get me wrong I do love performance cars of all flavours...but what about normal everyday cars? I visited a car lot to find out just how much car you can get for your money. Are they considerably cheaper with the current yen strength?

The kei cars can't really be compared to neither european nor american markets. We don't have those cars here in EU, even though i read some manufacturers are thinking about bringing them back. Some model seemed pricey, but i think it's due to the popularity. Thanks to the over inflated prices of newer cars (which are frankly becoming unaffordable for normal people) the prices of used cars skyrocketed. The Mazda 3 in the video has comparable prices, but here you only find specimens with very high kms. The Honda Fit/Jazz here in Italy is overpriced by at least 4-5k euro compared to the one in the video.

That Honda N Box doesn't look TEN years old! Wow. Great styling and still looks modern in 2024. £5600 is a steal!

Thanks for the comment, It's a real eye opener!

I didn't realise that a Prius holds it's value so well and also the Mazda 3. Maybe the forecourt prices are not so bad.It would be quite difficult to compare kei car prices as these cars are originally for the Japanese market.

Do you think Uk car prices have gone up?

Thanks for watching

I think the Daihatsu Tocot was quite good value, if I was to compare it to an equivalent year vehicle sold in the UK like a VW Up etc.. The Prius was a good price, for it's low mileage despite its age two equivalent cars with similar mileage are £9-12, 000 in the uk on Auto trader!
The Mazda Axela was also not badly priced, considering I can find an equivalent Mazda 3 only slightly cheaper here with more miles on the clock!
The other cars we're a bit harder to compare, but some seemed a bit expensive when you shown others Kei cars much newer for a similar price.
But we get that in the UK on cars, so its actually closer in price than you'd think.

Love Kei cars!! but some models are kind of pricey. This days buying a "brand new car" is not a good investment.

We got plenty of Honda Fit here in Dominican Republic.

Great video!! 👍

There are a lot of grey import new and secondhand Japanese cars in Hong Kong so I can only presume there are margins to be made but to be honest I was not greatly impressed by the prices of some of these cars, especially a couple that were well over 10 years old. I wonder how much cheaper the base price would be. To that would have to add shipping and import duty which is based on a government database of all models and years.
To give you an idea of prices here, about 18 months ago I picked up a 2014 model Volkswagen Golf 1.4 Tsi for equivalent of GBP3K with 80K km on the clock.
Also interested to know if when buying new and secondhand cars in Japan, is it the cultural thing to just pay the sticker price or do people still try to bargain with the salesman?

Man, bring all the kei cars to europe, they are so fancy and cute. They would work perfectly for eu cities. But idk how safe they are compared to eu Cars like the fiat 500. Wish daihatsu was here still😢. Is there any kei cars that is 100% electric in Japan yet?
