As someone who played soccer for 20 years up to a semi-pro level, I can confidently say most soccer players care more about how light a shin guard is rather than how much it protects. If we wanted something to protect us best, there are much bulkier options out there.

Expensive will be lighter and more comfortable. The cheap uses lots of foam and during a long game your legs will get insanely sweaty. This causes them to slip more than the expensive.
