Thank you so much for this! James makes me very anxious at times when I am wondering about my own salvation, but I have thought before that it must be about "usefulness, " just like the dead plant image you used. I just wasn't confident enough in my own interpretation to know if that was what it was saying! This is comforting and lays it out so well. Hope we can all find ways to live out that practical righteousness without hinging our sense of worth as Christians on it.

The death in "faith without works" is a spiritual death (loss of fellowship, not salvation), such as when Jesus says let the dead (spiritually) bury the dead (physically). The solution to spiritual death for the Christian is given in I john 1:9.
