Replacing the box mixes amount of water with the same amount of milk, and the amount of oil with the same amount of melted butter makes a richer, tastier brownie.

I don’t mind the boxed ones too much since my mom used to make a lot for school functions when I was a kid, but adding some oil, swapping out the water with milk and adding a bit of instant espresso powder will give you a softer, richer and smoother brownie that tastes richly of chocolate without being sickeningly sweet.

Here's how you do it: make it exactly as the box says but replace the oil with melted lard. Now you know where that weird homemade brownie taste came from: rancid seed oil.
