I use a Workbee, from Ooznest, c/w the Duet board. i'm used to Mach 3, & fully support your logic. It's better. More robust, & easy to re-aquire your position if you have to suddenly stop it. I am so familiar with driving it, this web interface driving the Duet (a 3D printer board) is frustrating. Grbl doesn't support toolchanges, for example. I'm going down the bob & seperate drivers, as if a driver drops, I can't replace the driver chips on a board like the new one you're fitting. Looking forward to your experience... 4A might be a bit much for that board over time... I'd be interested with the setup of your pendant. Teaser!
Links in your description is the norm...

How about the RichAuto type controller? A lot of professional CNC from China uses it. You do need extra motor driver but no pc needed apart from the one for producing g-code. You load the work by USB stick. This board is really old, I think there were a issue with the design, some guy rewire it before to stop driver overheating.
