My Top Gear Picks

In this beginner series video I'll show you how to turn on your snowboard. Turning allows you to control your snowboards speed, and use both edges of your snowboard to turn around the mountain. Before trying to turn be sure you have watched the previous snowboard videos in the series. They will give you the skills you need to turn your snowboard successfully. First try turning your snowboard on a very easy beginner slope. You can even get a friend to give you a hand for the first few turns.Practice turning your snowboard with focus on the three parts that complete the turn, letting you snowboard go straight, turning your body and pressuring your new edge. If you still have trouble learning how to try going back and practice sliding on your edges. Snowboarding is about having fun, so learn to turn at a pace you are comfortable with.

Love these tutorials!
Received a snowboard from a friend in MB as a gift before I moved to Penticton BC.
Only snowboarded once in my life... 6yrs ago.
I've been watching all the basic tutorials from purchasing the bindings, goggles, helmets and gloves/mitts, to watching all the tutorials vids on how to heel and toe slide, turn, get off a lift and skate

Right on man!
Thanks!

I started snowboarding like 1 week ago and I only tried it once and I can already say that this video helped me out a lot. I rarely say that but your youtube channel is freaking awesome lol. You earned a subscriber xD.

Usually when a heel turn is choppy its because you're controlling all your speed using your heels. Try staying on your toes a bit long and slowing yourself down a bit more on your toes. You can also try moving your high backs forward. What do you have your high back set at?

Just went out for the first time in 12 years, only went 1 time before. Got a lesson but watched your beginner series before I went out and it made a huge difference. I was a lot more confident and progressed pretty quick. Still struggling a little on heel to toe edge, but I just realized I wasn't pressuring my toe edge to complete the turn. THANKS!

Thank you, I had my first lesson for turning yesterday which was semi successful. This video simplifies the 3 moves and makes total sense. I will back on the slope on Sunday to practice.

Ya, Thanks for you question. If your flicking your back foot then you're probably twisting your body to turn. To fix it try making your turns bigger. Letting your board go straight for a few seconds then turning your whole body to turn, starting from your head down. You can also think about on your toe turns pulling your back hand back over the tail of your snowboard.

Just started snowboarding and had one great teacher that told me to operate your toes independently and that really helped. Saying to 'get on toes' or 'put toes down' would end up with me on my arse in light snow/icy conditions. Focusing on using your feet independently to edge one side of the board then the other as you turn really really helped.

Turning your body and pressuring your edges happens very close together, but in my experience I find if student pressures their edge first while the board is going straight they will fall over. I think if someone catches their edge as the board is turning then they need to practice sliding on their edges more. Thanks for the feedback. Does this make sense?

I am learning j turns. they were weird at first, but it got easier. You just need to have confidence in yourself. Snowboarding is very fun, but it is complicated at first, but you'll get the hang of it. I love :) <3

Great video. Thank you!!!! I went out for my first time yesterday and I struggled with toe to heel turns. For some reason heel to toe came much easier.

A lighter board will help, but practise heel and toe sliding allot before trying to turn. Do you fall more turning in a certain direction?

Have a safe snowboard trip! Those poma lifts can be difficult. I'll have to make it to Argentina someday!

I guess it depends on how hard the rail is. Can you just ride onto the rail or do you have to jump onto it? Also depends on how high off the ground it is.

It could be that you're putting too much pressure on you heel edge. You can set your hight backs forward to get the pressure to the center of your board. You can also bend your knees and hips as you go around your heel turn. You could also be coming into your heel turn with too much speed so try slowing yourself down more on your toe edge. Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.

It is very similar. I've taught a few longboarders before and they always pick up snowboarding super fast!

The board is a little short but I don't think that's really affecting your riding. When you do a beginner turn you control your speed by breaking and spraying snow down hill. The next step is to start spraying snow out the sides of your turns. Then you won't have that feeling of sliding straight while you break. I'll try and make a video of what I mean. Does this make sense so far?
