Why I Chose Electrical Engineering over Electrical Engineering Technology

Electrical engineering vs electrical engineering technology major is often a toss up for electrical engineering students. While electrical engineering technology major is more hands on than the electrical engineering major, most engineering students end up going for the first since it opens more options, but still some details are missing.

In this video I compare electrical engineering technology (EET) vs electrical engineering (EE) and discuss pros and cons of each, and why I eventually pursued careers in electrical engineering.

EE vs EET -- EET vs EE.

Your correct. It really is what you like to do. Typically Engineers and Technicians work very well together. Technicians tell the engineers systemic issues happening in the field so the engineers can try and design fixes. In fact as technicians we sometimes joke with the engineers when they do come out to a field site by saying things like, "First time you touched an O-Scope since College"? It's all in good fun. If an EE person ever says your EET is not a real engineering degree tell them that thier EE degree is not a real technologists degree.

The degree will get you in the door... Skill set, adaptation and communication will get you the best value...

I hold a BSEET.
I am an Engineer for a fortune 500 company.

In the US, electrical theory is pretty much the same for EE and EET.

I would say EET are more prepare for the field after graduation than EE.
But EE are more likely to pursue a Higher degree.

I cant speak for ET degrees outside the US.

One thing I've noticed is that many of the more technical or design heavy positions tend to require/highly prefer masters degrees. These include IC/semiconductor design, power electronics, analog design, signal processing and RF. Therefore, regardless of which route you take for undergrad, it's advantageous to go for the MSEE/MEEE. Sure it'll be easier to do that with a BSEE, but it's not uncommon for BSEET either.

In many countries, both engineering & technology are used alternatively

Definitely there is more flexibility with the syllabus for EET, so that it can adapt to changing technologies faster. In terms of mathematics, there is a debate on whether the additional mathematics carry over to the workplace as opposed to more CAD practice or other skill building courses. This is coming from an associates degree holder in EET, on track for BSEET and hopefully M.ENG EE in the far future. I have 8 years of experience in nuclear and now I'm working in space (NASA contracts). I've felt that I've used the most of my associates degree and it's time to move up, but the pathway for BSEET is 24 courses versus 44 courses for BSEE (I only get credit for 4 courses in BSEE!).

Hopefully this helps a fellow BSEET out there.

I appreciate how people think that BSETs are trained to be technicians and/ or mechanics. I don't recall taking any courses involving maintenance on equipment, machinery, or machining for that matter. Id remember taking courses that have open ended problems that require proper solutions. I'm in the US though, not sure about how it is in other countries.

Currently taking EET at my university we are require to take cal 1-2, diff equations, linear algebra and physics 1-2. The difference is the EE have to take cal based physics along with calculus 3

I am a little lost between Electrical Engineering Technology and Electronics Engineering .
When I do my research on the internet they kind of look the same for me . All I am interest in are designing, construction and testing devices of all kind I need some advice before peeking up a career.

Omg thank u. I have to set up an appt with an advisor on Monday. Rn I'm applied to the electrical engineering technology and I wasn't even sure what that was. I just want electrical engineering and I didn't know if it was the same thing. Thank you.

Major schools are now offering Bachelors Degree in EET. I think Ali needs to do a video on that also....

I'm in a BSEET program and it requires Calc 1 2, differential equations, physics 1, 2 and chemistry.

First of All both degrees are good. Get internships. Second, I've been engineer for 19yrs, and jave had no problems. I have an EET degree, and I make the same pay and same jobs as my counter parts. It's only tough getting your foot in the Door. Whatever I didnt know I learned online and applied it. Information is to easy to get now. You don't need a class to get more theory. Experience and willing to learn.

Random question..I hear that I'll have to sacrifice the next five years of my life (because in Kenya an EEE degree is 5 years)which I'm willing to do..but is it possible to have like a social life outside of the course

I am an electrician and I am interested in pursuing an electrical engineering technology degree, because I enjoy more hands-on work. I live in the state of Connecticut and as I look at undergraduate programs at the universities in my state I do not see a degree for that. All the ones I see are electrical engineering, electrical and computer engineering and I did see one community college have an electronics engineering technology program for an Associates. Any advice on what degree I should look for or should I just do a regular electrical engineering degree?

It’s like comparing a chemical engineer to a chemist. I made the same decision, you can’t even do half as much as an engineer as a technologist, & it sucks that some states let them take the PE exam which is insane.

What should I do if I have a math BA / minor physics but want to go into EE? Would it be worth it to get an EET associate degree at a community college? I work for an employer that's willing to pay up to 2500 a year in tuition, so I could get the EET degree for free or nearly so. I could go for a EE degree, but the cost and time commitment would be higher.

I'm now pursuing 3rd year of undergraduate degree in electrical and electronics engineering....after the completion can I take EET course in canada....is there any scope? And can I able to work as an electrical engineer?

How do you see getting a diploma in EET then going further to get a degree in Electrical engineering. Is it a good idea ?🤔
