Mansfield Park is definitely one it took me a reread to appreciate! I enjoyed Fanny and her quiet strength so much more the second time. I always thought she didn’t have much personality but I realized that she’s grown up constantly downtrodden and being told that she doesn’t deserve to take up space and all these other awful things, so it’s really amazing she’s grown up with such a good heart and intelligent mind. She’s not boring, she’s just quiet I think. And even though MP still isn’t my favorite Jane Austen, it gets points for having the only Austen antagonist who’s actually an interesting character to me rather than someone I suffer through for the sake of the plot lol. I still HATE the ending though!
I also used to hate JA retellings! I’ve definitely read some REALLY bad ones but lately I’ve gotten better at finding some good ones I really like. If the writing is period-appropriate and the characters are pretty true to Austen’s novels, I’m finding I’m willing to go along with lots of different story interpretations or concepts.
Ahhh Bride and Prejudice is so great!
Good luck with your Austen plans! I love the idea of using a challenge to motivate your research

Each of the film adaptions of Persuasion is faithful to the novel. However, the 1995 version with Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root is my favorite. Hinds’ whispering voiceover of “The Letter” is swoon worthy. You can find clips of just that on You Tube.

I'm so excited for my first Jane Austen July. I plan to read Persuasion and Emma, plus two adaptations of each :) I also think I'll be watching a film/show for each! I'm off to check out your playlist! ☺️🤩

So excited! PNP is my absolute favorite! Also, totally agree with you about Mary Bennett. I’ve always wanted to write a cozy mystery w/ her as the main character

So excited for all your videos on Austen - you made so many amazing ones last year! I'm excited for you to reread Mansfield Park too :) The 2000s Northanger Abbey is great, highly recommend.

I just finished reading Mansfield Park this morning and agree with you : I don't get what people see in it. Except Mrs Norris, she's irritatingly hilarious ! Next month, I'll be watching Bride and prejudice too, it looks like so much fun. And now, I'm going to take a look at your playlist :)

I'm so excited to have found this video. I love Jane Austen! I've read all her books and even one that was never finished. My bucket list is to go to the UK and ho in a Jane austen tour. I'm started with my favorite Persuasion, then Pride and prejudice, Emma, Northhanger Abbey, and for the non-six Sanditon...I cant wait. I'll have to think about the other 5 challenges. I know I'm definitely watching an adaptation of Persuasion.

What fun! This will take some planning but my initial thoughts on which Austen to pick are that I want to re-read Pride and Prejudice because it is such a perfect novel and definitely my favourite, however, I never managed to finish Mansfield Park and feel I should give it another shot. But I have never taken part in a read-along before so a P&P one is also appealing! Decisions, decisions! Is there a place we can perhaps post TBRs and share ideas? Is there a Goodreads group? I will check out the hosts’ videos. Looking forward to planning this!

Can't wait to have the chance of rereading Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice is such a delightful book to come back to. 😍

I've bought a copy of "Emma" for the occasion. I've only read "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen previously.

I would love to see a video on black aristocrats during Austen's time period. I will be reading Dido Bell: A Biography as well as the poetry of Phyllis Wheatley for two of the challenges and I'm hoping to watch the movie Belle. I think with the recent adaptation of Sanditon it brings to the forefront the fact that there were people of color living and existing in society during that time.

As for Mansfield Park, ugh I really dislike that novel as well.

As for Persuasion the 1995 adaptation is my absolute favorite. Happy reading!!

I agree that P&P is the best novel! I hope you enjoy Mansfield Park more. I actually really like it.

I have many retellings that I want to read in July. Fingers crossed I can find some gems in there! I have never heard of Charlotte before but I love Charlotte Lucas. I have always felt that she gets harshly judged for wise actions.

I had never heard of Anna Porter, but now I am intrigued. The Play Store has her books for free, I just downloaded The Hungarian Brothers, maybe I'll read it in July.

Hi Claudia, Relatively new to and enjoying watching booktube and first time JAJ participant. I too will be doing the read along for P&P (also a reread for me) and reading Mansfield Park, for the first time though. I am reading through Jane Austen’s novels in order this year and just finished S&S, which I did not love in the same way as I LOVE P&P. I am a bit worried after hearing your thoughts on your last experience with it, but also trust Katie who lists it as one of her top reads. Hopefully we’ll both get on well with it this July. Good luck! Really enjoyed hearing your thoughts and your PhD sounds fascinating.
