Don't scrap your Discovery 3 if the suspension fails

It's not everyone's cup of tea and a coil conversion will never be as good as air. BUT if repairing the air suspension on your Discovery 3 isn't finncially viable then coil springs could be the answer for you. This si a full fitting guide along with my first drive and initial thoughts on how good or bad the conversion is.

03244A - Discovery 3 Air Spring to Coil Conversion Kit - By Dunlop - Includes 4 Struts and ECU Disabling Unit

You can bid for this Discovery when we complete our tour to the Alps next year and included will be all the Sealey tools we've used to get it back on the road.

Here's a few of the tools we'll be using from Sealey to get the Discovery ready for an MOT:

I have a 2005 V8 petrol disco 3 and have done the same conversion as I was sick and tired of the air suspension faulting whilst I was in the middle of the outback (Australia). It was the best thing I ever did. I have done two other mods since.... I added a 20mm spacer to the top of the coils at the rear only and I substituted the kit coils with the Kings KRRR-14 coils (heavier duty than those supplied with the kit). The result was that the car's ride height is similar to the air suspension "off road" setting. I don't have any sag in the rear and don't have any "roll" as you demonstrated. My car has since, done the Victorian high country and the Simpson Desert and I couldn't be happier. Great video... wish I had access to some guidance like this before undertaking it myself... keep up the great work.. cheers

I've been waiting for this video as this is a job I'm going to do.
I'd rather spend the money on coils and do the job once rather than constantly spending money fighting and fixing a 18 year old 190000 mile air suspension.
Thank you.

That was a fair video, a lot of people never show anything going wrong or “not to plan” so well don’t for an honest and down to earth presentation.

I had to replace my compressor dryer unit today, took me less than an hour but to be honest iv done that before and all the fittings were stainless and I’d notched the top bolt hole on the cradle so the evil top bolt can be left in and the cradle slid out.

As I tow and also carry the occasional old relative, air suspension is great.

Had a poverty spec D3 with 6 speed manual 'box & coil spring suspension, it worked well for me, did well off road.

Fair play for your honest opinion on the springs after wrestling with them..

Hi, recently started watching your channel - enjoying the disco content, along with the delivery.

The roly-poly ride reminds me of a Land Cruiser I test drove about 10 years ago .... was like stepping back in time into a Range Rover classic.

Keep the vids coming - I'm a late L320 owner, so would like to see you get your hands on one of them!

I had this done to my car earlier this year. Best thing I ever did, although i got the Atlantic British OME coilovers. This did lift my LR3 up by 2 inches, but at least i know i can get through anything now 😆

By taking away the air suspension, it's like owning a regular truck/suv. What makes the Discovery 3 different from other suv is the air suspension combined with the terrain response. I own a 2008 Discovery 3 SE V8 with 103K miles, and I did have to change the air suspension, and I'm glad I kept it!
Cheers 🍻 🇺🇸

Ive had 4x4 with air suspension, while it was great on the road when you put it into the offroad settings it raised the car up for more clearance but then left me with pretty much rock hard suspension. So i wonder if the coil swap would make the discos off road ability better.

Great video. Shame about the initial result. I understand the need for a spacer to increase the pre load, but wonder if the spring rate is a true match. Look forward to the next episode.

Fair enough for a non biased review. The springs seem very soft and whether spacers have any effect regarding this aspect remains to be seen. They will improve ride level so aesthetically better.
I had a P38 converted to coils and it handled like a barge. However it was maintenance friendly and is still going strong

Hola entonces para un discovery de 2008 es necesario poner espaciadore?

What a shame. I understand why people believe coils are better than the air but as they say in this video it's not as nice. The air is a simple system to maintain and not expensive if looked after properly.

4 full air bags and compressor for £900. I'd never replace the air suspension.

I had a 2002 Discovery 2 which was basic and just had coil springs. Had no problems with it. Now have a RR Sport and having with ACE system leaks
