Use old iMac as MacMini Display with Target Display Mode

How to make use of the iMac as display for MacMini but limited to only those before mid2014 model.

I have an early 09 imac os x el capitan (10.11.6).Processing very slow and tech. outdated. Deciding to buy new imac (very costly) or buy new minimac4 (more $ reasonable). I'm not techy, however I found Target Disk Mode in cmptr. and this is what it says "Click to restart this comptr in Target Disk Mode. After restart in target disk mode, connect it to another cmptr using a thunderbolt or Firewire cable and use it as a hard disk". Is connecting a minimac as simple as this?

do you have a link for the cable being used? both my devices meet the requirements to use the target display mode, but I can't seem to find the proper cable to connect them to actually use the target display mode feature.
