Explaining how I'm using a 2013 iMac as a secondary display for an M1 Mac mini using an Iogeni HDMI to USB 3 converter. This also works for using an iMac as a single display for the M1 Mac mini. No warranties, this is my experience, yours may vary.

Just another tip ! Use the screen sharing (system preferences - sharing) build in MacOS on your local network. It even support files transfer between the two computers by drag and drop ! It works great and has no cost.

I am expecting my Mac mini M1 soon. I was thinking about using Luna Display in headless mode and their ‘Mac to Mac’ software for my 2012 iMac and thus using my old iMac as the primary monitor.

To anyone is watching this. You can buy a very good 4k USB-C monitor for the price of this box

Thank you for this! I have an iMac (late 2013) running Catalina. I want to get the Mac mini to upgrade the processor while still using my iMac screen. I haven’t upgraded to 2 screens yet ☺️

The info is incomplete. You need to give the specific year of the Mac Mini. Ive spent 4 days trying to work with Apple Care to get my 2013 imac to talk to my 2020 mac mini. After stripping the system off my Imac, at apples direction, I am now told you can mix a 2020 mac mini to a 2013 imac. So Im screwed! Dont ya love Apple care. About 11 different people telling me 11 different things to do and now, its a paper weight

Hey are there any adapters that do the same thing but aren't like...400 dollars?

@rossbelot Hi Ross, what were your settings on the Inogeni and camera app? My resolution is really really low and it lags. I am running a M1 Mac mini, pretty much the same setup you have. I think I must have the settings wrong somewhere. Otherwise it's a brilliant work around!

Out of all my questions and videos i watched you answered im a owner of a 2010 mid 27" imac with high serria osx 13. Volume what i cannot upgrade as non metal card. So looking at getting a mac mini or studio and hoped i can use on the imac as a screen

Do you know if there's a way to give the Mac Mini access to the iMac's camera? I'm thinking of doing this if I order a Mini, but I'd like to make sure I'd be able to use the iMac's camera (via the Mini) for things like Zoom calls

can I use my iMac late 12 running Catalina obviously with the new Mac mini m2 that would be really funky...and safe me a lot of bucks... not sure if my usb 2.0 will work, or if there is a work around using the faster thunderbolt, so from Mac mini hdmi to thunderbolt ....>?

If you hook up an (Mac mini) to your '2013 iMac' does it continue to receive the latest security updates or not?

Hey brother. Would you mind if I downloaded your video and used it for a snip in one of my videos on my channel? I would credit you, I have a lot of people asking how to do this very set up.

Thanks for a nice tutorial. If I aim to use my Mac mini as my main computer and iMac 2013 as the sole monitor, I would need an HDMI to USB 3.0 adapter, an ether net cable to transfer files from the iMac to the Mac mini, correct? Would I also need the Quick Camera App you mentioned? Or would that only be required if I had two monitors? Thanks in advance.
