Not LDS since 1985, so I have no say so in the " Church." That said, why doesn't the " Church" pay all their missionaries expenses, and give them a salary and health benefits. Their jobs can lead to some bad stuff including death on occasion. The General Authorities are paid for their service, and much of that isn't dangerous at all. The General Authorities seem like they're operating on par with the MOONIES.

Good point. Does an 8 year old living with Mormon parents really have a "choice"? Seems more like an expectation. Then, because they were baptized at 8, they are expected to serve a mission.

This is exactly why I don't like it when people act like being a man in the church is some great awesome priveledge. It isn't. Only a fraction of male members get any significant power or status. The rest of us are constantly pressured to do things we really don't want to do, and it's out of our own pocket. We're trained to be a bunch of brainwashed soldiers and we're severely shamed if we don't comply since we have the priesthood and everyone around us is dependent on our priesthood for receiving blessings from God. So if we're not doing what we're commanded to do, then everyone suffers

Explaining why a Mission should NOT be for everyone is ridiculous and pointless. It falls on deaf ears. I'm now MORE depressed about my Mission Service than I was in my original (now deleted) post. People think I'm GOING to hell for having a different opinion, but I don't need to go anywhere. I'm already here.

It’s not mandatory; it’s a choice. One is allowed to say no to any church calling, even a mission. Most Mormon young men are excited to go on a mission, not forced to go on a mission.
