I've ordered my first M1 MacBook a week ago, and while waiting (the delivery is slow because of custom memory options) my only joy is to watch these videos )))

I found this video really interesting. I love all that you do and your calm (seemingly!) but enthusiastic delivery. I learned a lot. Thank you 😊

My first “first” comment ever. Love the stuff you post!

best down to earth contents for the non-pro users hands down whereas most youtubers just cocentrate on stuff that 90% of users don't care about, and you indeed provide those info in depth, which I find quite impressive.

The clearest explanation of M1 model differences out there - thanks so much!

The night before the event my wife dropped her 2016 MB Pro killing the display. So after the event I ordered her a base MacBook Air. I think it will be a nice upgrade from the old 2 core MB Pro. For myself I expect tow wait a few months for the next iteration of Apple Silicon. I have no complaints with the current ones but I spend most of my time on my iPad Pro at this point so there’s no pressing reason to upgrade my old 2015 MB Pro. It’s incredibly slow but I don’t use it for much these days so a few more months won’t matter to me.

Agree with your point on the RAM. Nicely presented as always.

Interesting as always. I came to similar conclusions. Looking forward to your real life performance comparisons.

As a developer, I agree with your assessment 100%. The 16GB mini and the base mba are, by far, the best values! If you go with the MBP and get careless with upgrade creep, it'd be easy to reach the price of those two machines in total. I'm looking forward to a practical day-to-day difference report on 8 vs 16.

I'm really tempted by that entry level Mac mini as I already have a 1080p monitor, Bluetooth keyboard & Bluetooth mouse.

Based on the leaked Geekbench 5 scores (which admittingly are a rudimentary comparison), the M1 is a clean 2x jump over my current ATX Tower. That's not a huge leap, but it gets me in the door on macOS, which I've always regretted leaving.

I typically edit 2-3 video a week at 1080p60 as a hobby, so I don't feel the £200 investment for +8GB of RAM is worth it. Similarly, USB 3.1 Gen 2 storage is way cheaper than Apple's NVMe upgrades and plenty fast enough, so the value (for me) isn't there in Apple's built-to-order configurations.

Either way, I'm not purchasing until January, so I'll be better informed when the time comes.

Yep, I'm waiting to see what the performance is like. I have a late 2012 2.6 i7 with 8Gb which is still doing sterling service but would be happy to upgrade to the new Mini now.

I've also been looking at having a fast Nvme Thunderbolt drive or possibly a Drobo/Synology as a NAS (or both) as well as a Thunderbolt 3 dock to go with it.

Some great advice in here. I ended up ordering the low end Air simply because I don’t currently have a use or place for a Mac desktop.

My bad... The Intel site for ThunderBolt 3 was not updated to show the USB4 specification was released on 29 August 2019 by USB Implementers Forum, based on the Thunderbolt 3 protocol specification.

Still feel that feel Apple needs to change spec page for Mac M1 products to read . . .

Two Thunderbolt / USB4 ports with support for:

Charging
DisplayPort
Thunderbolt 3/USB4 (up to 40Gb/s)
USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s)

CANNOT wait for the 2021 M1Z chip 14'' MBP with Mini LED, and slim bezels. Using Big Navi graphics - it's gonna be special. If Apple can provide that at 16gb even at 256gb SSD for £2000 or under, well, they are gonna sell like hot cakes.

Looking forward to see how the base model air compares to the top-spec mini.

I’m goin for MacBook Pro 13. Goin to use it until 14 come out. Idk when but 14 is perfect in the middle of 13 and 16. 16 is way too big so is 15. And may they offer 32gb ram in the future
