Tailored stretching: Hip exercises (for arthritis and joint pain)

In this gentle fifteen-minute follow-along stretching video, physiotherapist Jay Milomo is joined by James who lives with arthritis. Together they demonstrate commonly recommended hip exercises for people living with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions, including hip extension, heel to buttock, squats, knee hugs, heel slide and external hip rotation. This session will be beneficial in building strength and improving mobility in the hip joints. Designed to be incorporated into your daily routine, these exercises can be done anywhere and at any time of the day that suits you. A couple of exercises involve lying down and they can be done on a yoga mat, on the bed or on the sofa.

Time: 15 min

Items to bring along: it would be helpful to have a chair nearby to hold unto.

there's something very reassuring about this video. I can't really explain why. As a 52 year old woman who is struggling to put her sock on at the moment due to arthritis in one hip, and wondering about a hip replacement, seeing a young dude in his trackies doing gentle exercises just makes me feel okay! sounds crazy I know! This is my new favourite channel btw! :)

These movements are great!I have right hip arthritus and see my physio once a month for her to 'do her thing'.Saw her the other day after doing these exercises for 2 weeks and she said how much better my hip was compared to the last visit.I've been walking with much more freedom and less pain than I have for ages...thanks guys, brilliant vid!

Thank you Jay, have tried lot's of hip exercises on you tube, pushing myself thinking I needed to do more, often having more pain and having to take it easy for a few days. You are the only physiotherapist that I have come across to put the emphasise on gentle, and it makes such a difference, thank you so much.

What a wonderful discovery! Jay wonderful exercises to get pain relief from my left hip joint. This is my third day in doing the exercises and they are vey gentle on my hip joint causing me to want to do it everyday as I get wonderful pain relief. I am hoping these exercises will strengthen my hip joint to the point that I will no longer need to take pain medication. Bless you, Jay... Thank you!

Hi, Jay. thank you so much for making such useful videos. I am really benefitting by not only watching but doing these exercises. i wish i could come across these exercises which have changed my life. I started to have this feeling that now life will be just moving aroung in the four walls of my home, no hope of going out forever. But now I am having very relieved from the pain as wel as hopeful of going out and doing things without much pain. THANKS ONCE AGAIN. Love from India

Simply brilliant - funny how long its taken for me to find a routine that seems right for me - when I first started watching I thought it maybe too easy, I still fancy myself as still quite fit around the hip (post arthritis in hip diagnoses), but no, these are very focused and strangely potentially suitable for everyone. Thanks a mill Guys!

Thank you guys. I am happy to say that I already do all of these on the video, in my daily routing stretched to start the morning off. The only difficulty I have is lifting the Pelvis up as high as shown in the video, because of the extensive metal work in the fused spine.

I love your videos! I have one small question. I'm 70 and I have arthritis in both my hips . I have been doing PT exercises on and off for last year and was active until 6 weeks ago when my cat tripped me and i fell on my tile floor. I was in the hospital for 2.5 weeks with a fractured hip and surgery . They placed a metal plate and inserted a rod down my femur on my right side. I am on blood thinners and needed a pint of blood. Thus the longer hospital stay. I struggle with physical therapy and trying to walk since then. I feel much of this is fear of losing my balance and falling again. I feel I could get back on track with this video but do I need to do anything different? Any additional videos I should be watching? I am so glad I found you!

The ist four exercises the physio at my doctors gave me to work on.ive been following on this website. I'm sure the physio told me to do these once a day is thatcorrect

Hi, firstly to say thank you so much for these videos - they've massively helped me and are the only exercises I've found that are manageable to do most days. I'd be grateful if you could let me know if I can do these exercises if I've got hip impingement, or if this wouldn't be advisable? Thank you!
