I am also 38 and starting on my own self taught journey to break into tech. I'm not discouraged by the layoffs at all. Tech is not going anywhere and it is only growing. Figure it will take me 6 months to year to have enough of an understanding to apply for and get a job.

I'm already 42 this year and just started learning web development. Hopefully there will still be job and opportunities for me in the future.

Sorry, but ageism is a thing in the space. Learning the skills and getting hired are different. There is no age limit for learning, but age is a factor in hiring. It should not stop anyone from trying, but it's a false narrative to claim it has no impact. Picking out the example of that one 50 yr old woman who made it; thats a perfect example of survivorship bias. It'd be better to interview 100 people around her age and experience level, and see what percent land a job. I'm 34 and I'm the oldest engineer at my company (but my org is indeed very young). The age thing varies by company (startup vs established orgs), the technical space (web vs embedded, etc). Your age should not stop you from trying to get into the space, but the reality is you will be at a disadvantage at a certain point. A company will typically pick the 20 something over the 50 something. That's the truth. Love the channel tho, keep it up!

Well said! Many people have the misconception that you've to start coding 8 years-old to make it. That's not true.

I see many "old" people making it all the time.
