In this Video I talk about Learning To Code After 40 and Can It Be Done? We often hear that learning to code is best when you're young and not really possible when you're an adult.

I just turned 41 and I started learning to code at about 30 years old. Over the years My coding skills have greatly improved primarily because of my study habits and my commitment to learning how to code.

Here are some other Code related videos you might enjoy:

What's On My Desk

I'm a strong believer that you can learn just about anything and at any age. There's also a lot of research that talks about learning and aging and the results are conclusive, you can learn at any age.

Learning to code isn't easy and requires a lot of focus and time. That's what typically limits people, the focus and time needed to learn the complex topics about code.

Also people often have a false belief that they're too old to learn how to code so why should they even bother.

This prevents them from ever starting to learn how to code in the first place.

Im 42 and learning to code. And one thing I can say is that I'm a much better learner and way more disciplined now at 42 then when I was 22. I think experience teaches how to value your time.

I am 49 and I am much more able to easily learn than I did in my teens and 20's. I know more about learning behaviors, best practices and techniques. I think it's easier to learn now compared to when I was young and immature.

Excellent advise. I am 60, and have changed my profession multiple times, many did not software coding. I started with COBOL & FORTAN in 1970's, but over the decades I learned to many more coding skills, and tools. The modern development tools make it vastly easier to code, but one skills that I have found that helps with designing a plan to code with any code is ability to break a topic or domain into logical elements from concept to smallest elements. This is where my learning to model designs using modeling notation that can generate a multitude of languages have allowed me to create and reuse code in one code language into another.

Video has good sage advice, that I can sum up to this, On your journey through life: 1. You should be on a constant learning curve.
2. It is never to late to learn more, especially new things. Embrace the unusual and unfamiliar.
3. If your lucky enough to find work that brings you joy and passion, keep feeding it, but don't be afraid to change it if you find a better one.

I'm 43. Run my own business full-time and also work at a warehouse part-time. Been learning to code in my free time for a year now. Definitely not too old to code. Being overworked doesn't help though. Most of my customers are older. I guarantee you that I know at least a few people about age 70 that definitely have the sharpness of mind to learn to code.

Switching careers from a tow truck business to software developer at 41. You can do it don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Personally, my first love is learning regardless of my age. And the older I get, the easier it gets for me to understand stuff. And I learn quicker by understanding instead of memorizing. I'm turning 54 soon and guess what. I've just set myself a new target to learn how to code before the end of this year. And it's going to be self-taught. Coding or any other subject can be easily learnt by anyone at any age provided they commit themselves to it.

Great video! This is what it comes down for me: passion and dedication. I got into coding in my early 30s... just a few years later, I have held senior data engineering positions and am a solutions architect for a large company. I did not go to school for computer science and have been self taught. Instead of hanging out or watching tv wasting time, I was online working in labs, watching tutorials, and spent my time LEARNING and STUDYING. I was obsessed and determined to build a career in this space.... this applies to just about anything else in life. If you have passion and dedication, and genuinely enjoy what you do? You can't go wrong. Subscribed.

I've not long hit 41. I have recently allocated 2 hours per evening to start again on web languages and hopefully make better progress than i did 10 years ago.

I have also cut back on processed food, as i believe that can impact the brain. Might also try fasting soon, as that apparently helps memory.

i have been self-taught for about 6 months, my HTML and CSS are advanced level and my goal is HTML, CSS and JS expert functional level in 1 year. Oh, my age is 75 and realize no company will hire me so free-lancer is okay and if no success, still okay. For me it's not about money...

You also don't need to be a 'master' to be a programmer you just need to be 'good enough'. Perfectionism is a classic procrastination technique.
