i love it reminds me of retro consoles but it's lost the portable and clamshell factor which was nice, i don't know what to get but guess it must wait until after google glass

It's not a bad idea when you think about it. It makes the system loads cheaper because of the lack of the 3DS components (which barely anyone uses anyway). I'd also imagine it makes the system lighter and easier to hold too.
The design could stand to be better though...

It doesn't actually have 2 screens, just 1 screen that's partly covered in the middle and at the sides of the bottom.

Another part of the reasoning behind it is that they're aiming this at younger children as the 3D of the 3DS can potentially damage developing eyes. However, parents (if they could be bothered to research the things they buy for their kids) can disable the 3D in the system settings.

I get that Nintendo want to make a cheaper handheld by dropping the 3d part of the console but why have 2 screens if it can't fold?

You do realize this is marketed towards kids right? Because the 3D feature is for people 7+ and kids can break the hinges. That's why you see the kid playing the 2DS and the dad playing the 3ds. Makes sense, doesn't it?
