What Are Some Healthy Processed Foods?

Here’s something you might be surprised to learn: not all processed foods are bad! It’s the level of processing that matters. Canned sardines, sheep’s yogurt, and sauerkraut are all minimally processed foods that support health.

In a recent episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, we will learn precisely what ultra-processed foods are, how to identify them, and their impact on human health and the global economy.

We’ll also discuss tips and tricks for how to read food labels to better navigate the grocery store, and the innovations happening in Washington to develop label laws that help protect the consumer.

You can find the episode on your favorite podcast app.

PS you sir are amazing. My husband and I have been watching you for a bit and my mom reached out to me yesterday to share your podcast titled “Secrets to Conquer Autoimmune Disease” - I didn’t even know you had podcasts. And she’s telling me to leave
PCP, endo, and gastro behind and find a functional medicine doc! Unfortunately there are zero in my area. So I will keep listening to you and folks like you in the meantime! Fun story, I ended up at urgent care and they admitted me to the ER. While I was there I asked the ER doctor for a full thyroid panel because they were already taking blood. They tested my TSH only. Then today I heard your podcast and you even mention getting a full panel but they don’t listen! I will keep pushing. Thanks for all you share on here. Thankfully after genetic testing I’ve been on methylated multivitamins for about a year and I think they are seriously keeping things in check but I had to go off them because apparently they can impact the efficacy of my antibiotics, and I can already feel a difference. It’s only been a week or so and I’ve already had 2 flare ups. What you speak is the truth! I went low FODMAP at the urging of a gastro and it helped but didn’t. Went AIP and it helped but didn’t. My food diary helped me notice that it was a combination of things but also that there were things on the “good lists” I couldn’t tolerate and on the “bad list” that I could. So I started listening to doctors on here since you all are free and I’ve spent THOUSANDS on specialists who got me nowhere. All I did was cut out ultra processed food including seed oils and take methylated multivitamin. I eat mostly whole now and minimally processed. If it’s processed I’m picky about ingredients. I make most things myself from scratch, and when I don’t have the time or energy I make easy healthy choices. All things I learned from you and people like you. And I feel SO MUCH BETTER! While I’m not 100% I can function again. I’m no longer exhausted by 3pm and falling asleep. I wake up early and feel rested. I haven’t felt rested since maybe 2010. My thyroid disease symptoms are still there but not debilitating. It’s so wonderful. I want to get to 100%. Guess I need to listen more.

Thank you for sharing all these nuggets of knowledge! Trying to eat healthy in this processed food society requires some extra effort.. especially, when you are a busy working mom. But your videos/tips are very helpful !

This man is one of maybe 6 doctors that have been my “go to” educators on my journey to a healthier life in the last 4 years. I have lost 55 pounds and am WAY healthier than I was then. I no longer have age spots on my face, my skin feels better than it has in decades, my gout went away immediately. I was pre diabetic, pre hypertensive, out of shape, and my sex drive was way down. All that has changed for the better. We basically switched out all the foodstuff in our house. We haven’t used white sugar in years, and we go non-GMO, whole, natural, organic, free range chicken/eggs, meat that is NOT fed gmo grain… It costs more, but we eat less and are satiated much longer, so we spend the same on groceries, we just buy less, but buying the best. With intermittent fasting we eat only twice a day. I’m 65, 5’ 11” 170 lbs. 32” waistline, walking 2-4 miles most days and I look 55 years old. I looked 70 years old at age 60 before we turned our lives around.

Nice video thanks for the information.

Just some food for thought here.

The governments trying to shut down small farmers you know why?

Because if we all learn how to live off the land and sustain ourselves without outside, help, they look at it as a complete and total threat. Our forefathers had it right. Live off the land and you’ll never know when a recession comes or goes in our crazy government. Then and only then, do you know that the foods you have are foods you made and grew from your own hands, and will cause you no harm

Dr. Georgia Ede for example says olive oil is prosessed (Will it oxidase too? Is it often mixed with other oils?), so better to eat your organic olives. I have no problems with milk or cholesterol ("bad fat"), so I eat cheese too. At the moment I put some organic feta with scrambled eggs. I was a long time agaisnt red meat, but I have given up. I just had a lovely dinner around cow liver (onions, capris, mushrooms and cream with it), kimchi and avocado along.

What about cooking ingredients like pesto, houmous, harissa pastes, curry sauces etc that you find in supermarkets, are they ok to have?

Why is there no discussion around processed meat causing cancer? Even the WHO recognizes this. There is also a strong link between egg and dairy consumption and prostate, breast, and colon cancer.

All oils with rare exceptions become rancid upon oxygen exposure. Biochemistry taught me this and is true of even an apple left long enough off the vine.

I've seen u for yrs on PBS, and definitely have appreciated ur great info in ur vids, but it's very disappointing u would put out such a misleading lemon drinking vid, probably just for the views.
Now I have to question ur vids, if I even decide to watch them.
Ur tripping over the dollars just to pick up the dimes.
Hope ur lemon vid makes up for all the views u'll lose as people find out it's just not true according to a full and complete research.

Those examples are easy. But I also know the ingredients for a donut. Is it thus not ultra-processed?
