A little known fact about Nelson British Columbia is that it was a Haven for people avoiding the Vietnam war that came up from the United states. The mayor of the Town wanted to erect a monument showing the friendship between the United States and Canada but the veterans of World Wars in United States objected so loudly that the monument was never installed.

The helicopter with the bucket is used to fight forest fires. They dip down in a lake and fill up the bucket, then dump it on a fire. Seems odd to see them in the winter though. Maybe they were training?

the insurance thing... when you are a country with a social medical plan and you live right next to a huge country where insurance coverage is all over the map our system was getting burned too often.. so now pay up front.

The first time I saw Nelson was on the big screen. It was a Steven Martin comedy called Roxanne. It's a modern retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac. I don't remember how good the film was, but the setting was beyond beautiful.

Take a few minutes to check out a video on “the code”. It puts new perspective on the hockey bashing.

Most hospitals will direct bill your insurance. It’s likely the ski hill and USA proximity that forces this location to take a hard line.

Cannabis has been legal all across Canada since October 2018. In British Columbia, you can grow up to four plants per household and possess up to 30 g in public.

I imagine there's a couple of Canadians in a clothes shop in New Plymouth asking staff "can you start a room for us"?😂 You both look so relaxed and happy, just what you needed. Happy new year!

It is unusual for a hospital to ask for money uofront in Canada. But all provinces ask residents fo Quebec for money upfront when seeking healthcare too. Places with high tourism have probably been left without a payee too many times

It seems hilarious to me that you were worried about getting Asian food in BC.

Other provinces have liquor in the grocery stores.
Hockey didn't used to be as violent. It was more about skill. More interesting to watch.

That Big Orange Bridge behind you is called BOB. That smell has always been in the Kootenays, except now it's legal. Hope you have a chance to go to Ainsworth Hot Springs and spend some time in the cave.

Regarding turning right on red, when we arrived from the US I had to ask a local whether or was allowed, and I got a look as if I were crazy.

I'd read that the "right on red" phenomenon began in America in the 1970s during the fuel crisis when petrol was rationed and very expensive. It was popularly believed that not having to stop your car could save fuel, and decades later the practice is still with us.

If you read up on the safety statistics however, there are far more pedestrian injuries because right on red means a car might turn into a pedestrian who is legally crossing on the green crosswalk. Yes the drivers are supposed to look and give way to pedestrians, but accidents happen... And much moreso than if the practice were 100% prohibited and the traffic and pedestrian crossing signals could work as intended, unimpinged.

Hi Liz & Bri. I'm sorry to hear about Sonny's accident. As regards health care, we have free, universal health care coverage in Canada, but the rules very slightly from province to province. Also, you need a provincial health card, and only citizens and permanent residents qualify. As for paying upfront, I'm not sure if you would've had to have done that in my province of Ontario. Enjoy the rest of your stay. I'm glad you guys experienced a hockey game, as it's a real piece of Canadiana.

Thank you for highlighting our province and visiting. Happy Anniversary to both of you 🎉

I’m sure the reason our health insurance is a little different here is due to our proximity to the US… to keep Americans without medical coverage from abusing our system.

Congratulations on your wedding anniversary!! The way you two looked at each other getting all sappy. ❤❤ marriage can be hard and you are 🎉. We just visited New Zealand for 13 days. Never seen so many roundabouts in my life! It was an amazing holiday. We went to New Plymouth, drove past your village. Saw the black sand, it was magical.
