COST OF LIVING CRISIS UK 🇬🇧

People in the UK are grappling with a cost-of-living crisis, marked by dramatic increases in the prices of rent, energy, and food. Meanwhile, incomes have not kept pace, making it increasingly difficult for many to make ends meet.

The aftermath of Brexit has introduced new border charges and led to a shortage of shop and haulage workers. Additionally, the war in Ukraine has exacerbated the situation by driving up energy costs significantly.

The cost of living crisis has been a perfect storm for UK residents. It coincided with the war in Ukraine, which caused energy costs to soar, and Brexit, which resulted in the loss of many shop and haulage workers. Additionally, Brexit has led to hefty inspection charges on all imported goods, containers, and vehicles. While things are clearly bad in the UK, with household bills suddenly tripling overnight, we would like to hear from our viewers overseas. How has the war in Ukraine affected your shopping bills? Are the prices we pay in our country, given current exchange rates, similar to what you are experiencing? Please help us continue this conversation.

Cost of Living crisis needs to be called what it actually is;

Corporate Greed Crisis.

It's not "exasperated" energy costs, it's "exacerbated" energy costs. I keep hearing people make this mistake. "exacerbated" means to make worse. Exasperated is what people feel when this happens.

It isn't a cost of living crisis, it's a cost of greed crisis.

Brexit and war is not the main reason for price increase. It is due to government money printing !

Remember people said they will support Ukraine regardless, well here you have it, at the cost of the people of the UK.

Oh nice I wonder what ours looks like, as I try and keep out of it as much as possible😁. The problem with Brexit is, we have still not had it yet, all of the main parties, the big businesses (who wanted to flood the country with cheap labour who would all be happy to work for minimum wage), the media etc, none of them wanted it, so they have done their best to obstruct it and only done the minimum they could to implement it but there is so much more they could have done if their heart had been in it. I would not have a clue with the prices in the shops, when Mrs Metalman goes food shopping, I go to the gym. Brexit, just like Covid is perfect excuse for retailers and in fact anyone who provides a service of any kind to put up their prices and provide a poor service and I can see this going on for years to come. To be fair you did a great job guessing those prices, I think they should have put you in charge of Brexit, cheers Alan

In Croatia, it started when we joined the Eurozone. While we had our own currency, everything was somehow under control, but after the introduction of the Euro, prices went wild. It is certain that the war in Ukraine also had an impact, but still, most of the income goes to utilities and food.

Wages should be linked to inflation. I guarantee you inflation would always stay low if that was the case

Shopping has become a real challenge for many I have to agree. While in Australia and New Zealand I was horrified at the prices. More so in New Zealand as I am more familiar with the prices there. I was really glad I could help out the weeks I stayed with my son and his family. What does annoy me is the products that are often on special. Non essentials that is. Parents don't need, chocolate biscuits, chippies, fizzy ( including energy) drinks and luxury soaps on special but general weekly NEEDS, like butter, eggs, milk, vegetables. One supermarket chain in New Zealand have in the fruit section, a basket with fruit for children ( one per child) free for the taking. We have the luxury of a fresh food market on Friday and Saturday. I have just bought 3 capsicum, a large head of broccoli, 8 nectarines, a punnet of chestnut mushrooms, two punnets ( quite large) of blueberries and 500gr cherries for the magic sum of €13, 50 (1€ is 0:85 bp). We buy our fish, cheese and poultry at the market too. I'm watchful for specials at the supermarket. Truth is, one can make a decent meal for little if one has the skills. Many yiounger families don't seem to have had the budget education I had in my day or the cooking lessons etc. I'm not saying there isn't a problem but listening to my mums stories years ago she had it tough too with 4 children and one income. It taught me a lot how to manage my budget. Are we only buying the essentials or do we feel we have a 'right' to more? Sorry, I always like to see both sides of the coin first. Chapeau to those families coping and facing their challenges weekly. Have an awesome weekend dear Jill and Nick. Love this item - needs to be discussed. 👌🇳🇱🙋‍♀🥝

Lidl and Aldi are really good. Interestingly, I was in Morrison's today, and they had a sign that said price matched with Lidl and Aldi. As you are in Scarborough, it would be interesting to know how Proudfoot compares against them. If they still exist. That jingle is stuck forever in my head. 'Proudfoot, foodstore, everything you want, and so much more. Proudfoot, foodstore, eat better for less'.

The cost of living crisis IS actually happening, and it's kinda alarming how we just live with it like there's nothing to be done, (some don't even realise...). My partner and I used to shop at ASDA, but stopped because they just went crazy putting the prices up. One of the items I have kept my eyes on is the asda finest sausages, back in 2018/19 we could get 2 x £4, now each package is almost £4!, and they kept putting them up every 3 or 4 months, chicken breast and mince are other examples, fruit juice as well. Restaurant prices, back in 2018 in The Guy Fawkes Inn York, as an example, the 3 course meal was £14.93, now in 2024 the same menu has gone up by almost 15 pounds (£29). I am originally from Mexico, and although we have got the same cost of living crisis over there, wages have gone up accordingly (86% from 2019 to 2024), other countries have responded the same way. Let's hope this new government responds to this issue soon.

This shopping on the table is just full of useless shi* products! U could buy something else instead of that, real food and not sauces, sweet drinks and alcohol. That's not necessary.

Hi Nick and Jill
Congratulations to you, two on surpassing
Do you often go grocery shopping together?
When you start grocery shopping what is the first selection to go?
meat/seafood? dairy and bread? vegetables and fruits? wine/beer/soft drink? snacks?
Do you care Organic food?
OMGoodness, cage free eggs are $5 for a dozen here in the US
Everybody has something addicted to...
K7S loves craft beer...Me? Starbucks! hahah
No Ice cream in your fridge?
I like to buy fruits and vegetables in individually wrapped if possible...for instance, not a bag of oranges.
Bulk purchase is wise, but they could go waste.
I usually spend over $100 per week since I like fresh fruits and vegetables to cook with meals.
hahah Bucket of icer cream stay in the fridge...
I often seek for more reasonable prices on non-perishable items at Amazon Prime. No gasoline to spend and delivery is Free.
I cannot imagine some parents having hard time with adolescence.
Brilliant topic. Well done, Nick and Jill.

Important topic, living costs certainly have gone up and up and your right the majority of people wages just haven’t kept up with the cost of living. Sadly I don’t see it changing any time soon either and imagine we will likely see a bigger gap between those living below the poverty line and those above. Something certainly needs to change.

The cost of food is tremendous here...and our major grocery stores have had record profits. So I guess the shareholders and management are making a good living. I usually only buy things when they are on sale and so without on other times. But what a great idea for trying to guess prices! Just water has doubled in the last couple of years and now they are even looking for more. Electricity too...up significantly! The one positive is that I am mortgage free, so at least I don't have to pay that or rent. Just have to do what we can to make ends meets. Take care over there!

How good was Nick in that pricing! WOW he was amazing, I got nowhere near any of those prices. What truly amazed me was the size of your kitchen, you could fit all of my hovel into half of your kitchen. It just goes to show how the other half live. Well done on producing a light hearted Friday night film. 👍
