In this video, I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS4.

This problem happened with my .png photo file, but you might see this message working with any of the following file formats: .jpg .jpeg .bmp .gif .pdf .tiff .raw .tif

2021 still got this error and your way still works perfectly fine. No intro, no talking around, just go directly to the problem and solve it. Man, I love this guy.

there is a problem (you change the format of background)

Mac Users, open in Preview, Export as same format (i.e. jpeg to jpeg), then voila, open in Photoshop now.

For Mac folks who obviously don't have MS Paint, just open it in Preview, then select "Export" and save it again (even in the same file format, like he does in the video) and it will open in Photoshop just fine.

Did the job, brilliantly. "Go raibh mile maith agat" (Translatiom; "a thousand thanks") from Ireland.

This worked for me to a degree. I'm using CS4 too. But when I tried to save in Paint (as .png) it said I would lose my transparency and sure enough, it opened fine in Photoshop but I lost the transparency (which was the whole purpose of me wanting it as a .png file to begin with).

but we need png files for their empty background in the first place. turning them into jpeg won't solve the problem

Too bad Microsoft said they weren't going to support paint in the future anymore :( Thanks for the video btw, it really worked :D

This is a great tutorial. Short, concise and no "Hi I'd like to duh give a shout out to er all those who missed me whilst I brushed my teeth" etc. Thank you MrJayBusch - people like you make YouTube tuts that are invaluable!

This started happening to me a few weeks ago after years of using Photoshop CS4. It only happens when I try to open .PNG files.
The strange thing is, if I open a PNG file directly after launching Photoshop, it opens up fine. The problem comes around after having worked with the program for some time, possibly by opening up several different formats and having them open at the same time.

I have been attempting to problem shoot what exactly cause the error to begin with but so far I've seen no definitive pattern.
I've tried to open png files right after launching (or re-launching) photoshop, and they always open up fine then. I've tried to open up PSD files and JPG files and then then open up PNG files... this seems to be a risk factor and sometimes the error then occurs but far from always. The ONLY time the error is more than likely to occr is when I've been working with images for a while and then try to open a PNG. It also doesn't seem to matter if the files I've been working on were also PNG files.

The most frustrating about all this is that once the error has occurred, Photoshop is no longer able to SAVE any PNG files that I already have open. The save option is there and active (as opposed to grayed out), but when I go to save, to takes longer than usual and when I go to the save option (which now SHOULD be grayed out, until you do any kind of changes to the file) is still active. If I close out the image and wait for Photoshop to prompt me to save upon closing, it does so but it doesn't actually save anything. If you're really unlucky, it will close the image after it's done saving, but nothing is in fact saved. However, this is seldom the case and what you're left with is that the image doesn't close at all, and the only way to close it by choosing not to save.

The "save as" feature usually doesn't work either at this point.

Your only option then is to copy whatever you've done in the png image to a new document, and then save it in a different format. Obviously if you're working with a PNG with multiple layers, you will have to copy each layer into the new document and save it as a PSD.

My advice to everybody who encounters this error (whether is happens consistently, or as in my case haphazardly), is to ALWAYS work in PSD format, and only save as a PNG when you're certain the image is completely done.

This is not a fix, but I hope it may help to alleviate some frustration out there.
PEACE!

four years later and this fix still works. Thank you.

Works well enough. I do kind of feel like there may be a loss of quality, but that could just be a factor of the original file.

WHY THIS IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING -> I'm a software developer, and while using Microsoft-built imaging libraries, BMP images I was saving were not loading into PS. First, this is a ridiculous problem, Adobe Bridge, Paint, the OS, everything else can read and deal with these files, but PS, the 'Mac' daddy (no phun intended) of file formats, gets cranky, needs a nap, and refuses to load them. The fact that the fix everyone is using is to load the images into the world's most pedestrian paint program MS Paint, and IT can handle it, but $1000 PS cannot, is atrocious. The issue is the image was NOT a BMP, despite the file extension. I was saving the images using the default built-in settings and specifying the .BMP extension. When looking at the file in a binary editor, it was in fact a PNG file. Someone else had mentioned that PS does not auto-detect the format of these files, and that is indeed the actual problem. It sees the .BMP extension, tries to load it using the BMP module, and pukes. So you can actually look at the first few bytes of your file, and it should tell you if it is a BMP in the first few characters (BMP), or if it is a PNG, PNG. Just make sure your file is actually using the correct extension. And shame on Adobe for allowing such a stupid problem to exist forever.

Straight to the point no messing about and worked fine. If all people was like you on YouTube more problems would be solved. Nice one.

This keeps happening to people & Adobe always says the same thing- it's a corrupted file or the user saved it incorrectly. They aren't listening- users with this problem usually can't open ANY .png files. It's not a corrupted file & not something they've done wrong. Something happens to certain versions of Photoshop & Adobe won't even admit to the problem. It's nice of you to help people with a workaround for this issue but it would be better if Adobe would just FIX THE PROBLEM!
