Context: The brothels in Pompeii are often seen as "funny" because of the explicit murals that cover their walls. There are also phallic symbols on the streets pointing the way to them. It's pretty common for visitors to joke around when they visit the brothel (lupanare). I have to add that most people don't laugh out of malice, they are usually unaware of the harsh conditions lived by these women.

Thank you for unveiling the truth of these ancient brothels. People don’t talk enough about the women sex workers of the old world, especially when many popular movies are giving the false impression that these brothels were sensual, entertaining and almost always being seen as a place to transform a boy into a ‘man’. That is how women were and are seen under the male gaze of a patriarchal society.

No shade to those who chose this as a profession and need our protection, but the line between voluntary work and slavery - waged or outright - is so thin I grieve for those throughout history who were forced to be here and for those who felt compelled to use the services because they couldn’t obtain what they sought through better means.

as an archeology fan I’ve always wanted to visit Pompeii, but I’m also terrified of the emotional weight I’ll have while going through there… for some reason I’ve always been able to feel things like dread, fear, heaviness etc in places where historically bad things happened like the local park where a TB hospital was, ex asylums etc etc

Brothels are still legal in many european countries, and they don't work very different. They say women wants to do it, eventually it's still human trafficking
