Each of the tools shown are very useful in sports graphic design. In general the centerpiece of your edit is the player themselves so it is very important to get across that you care about showing them in the edit.

You do not have to use everything I say here but this is showing how I go about my editing. Not every photo will need all these effects and also it may not suit your edit but this is a good place to start.
