I'm actually a PhD candidate in high-energy/accelerator physics currently, and often wish we could somehow use these insanely high energy cosmic ray particles for studying particle physics. In particular, I work with plasma-based accelerators, and there are some fascinating theories that the conditions within a plasma dielectric field could occur over huge scales at low density in space, possibly explaining the acceleration mechanism of cosmic rays, but it's just one hypothesis
