Google Tag Manager tutorial for beginners (2025) || GTM Course

A step-by-step guide on how to get started with Google Tag Manager (and install Google Analytics 4).

@AnalyticsMania Why would one add triggers and events via GTM vs GA? I would have thought primary use of GTM was to set up tags, and then manage the tracking and stuff on GA instead..

I set up the Google tag exactly like in the video but I do not see the tag fired upon initialation when looking at the Google analytics tab in Google Tag assistant. I see it fired on all pages although I have set it to initialisation - all pages (on top of the left hand side Summary tab - where the page title is shown. No errors in the Console.
When I look at the debug view in GA4 I see all of the events I did in the tag assistant. So does it mean it is correctly set up or do I have to check something?

Thank you for the tutorial on GTM! I have a basic question. If GA4 automatically measures enhanced measurements such as page views, then why do we need to set up a Google tag for initialization on all page views? Is it going to double my results on accident? Or is it going to give me more information about those page views?

Hey Julius is there a way to track dynamic phone numbers with google tag manager for example from callrail in a way to where you can change the name of the custom html so that you can use that for reporting from google analytics. Hope that makes sense

just a heads up, the google chrome extension "tag assistant companion" seems to be deprecated and after you install it they ask you to instead install a version called "tag assistant" - so the link to "tag assistant companion" seems to be currently outdated
