Man Paralyzed After Horrific Gym Accident When Squat Lever Falls On Neck | GI News

A 42-year-old man was left paralyzed and given a 1% chance of walking again after a machine in the gym malfunctioned and landed on his neck.

Regilaneo da Silva was resting between sets, sitting on the bench, when a lever holding 330 pounds collapsed and landed on his neck. The incident occurred in a gym in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceara. In the video, three men rush over to help da Silva, who underwent emergency surgery.

Regilaneo da Silva Inácio, 42, says he celebrates being alive after undergoing a delicate surgery to reconstruct his spine.
"The blow was so violent, I felt myself being broken in half. It was like my legs were no longer part of me, they were outside my body. Thank God It was a miracle the machine didn't hit my head, maybe not I would be here to tell the story."
The driver says he does not know how to explain what happened and only remembers a large number of people suddenly surrounding him.

"I locked the machine, went down, went around, put on more weight, and sat down to rest. And it happened. At the time, I thought I had died. I felt my body leaving, the part under my hips out of control, everything asleep, it's such a weird feeling, as if I didn't have my legs. The pain was so violent, that at the same time I had the awareness that I would never walk again. Whatever happens to me is profit. It's very difficult to accept, however, I'm not going to give up, I'm going to chase it, I'm going to look for the 1% chance that I can walk."
After surgery, the family celebrated Regilaneo sitting in a wheelchair, which, according to him, he learned from doctors to be unlikely in such a short time. "Thank God everything worked out. More than they imagined", he concludes.

The gym is such a great place for the body, mind and spirit. I hate to see anybody lose their ability to go there. I hope modern technology can help him regain his ability to walk again.

This case happened here in Brazil to be especific in the State of Ceará, the man is recovering and relearning to walk, which is an impressive advance given the severity of the accident, medics said that he had only 1% chance of walking again but he surprised and is walking
