Cast iron skillets are durable and versatile pieces of cookware. Seasoning forms a natural, easy-release cooking surface and helps prevent your pan from rusting. If you season your skillet the right way, you’ll set yourself up for years of great cooking and easy cleaning.

The small rings on the Knapp Made chain-mail scrubber make for a nonabrasive surface that won’t damage the cast iron and can get into the corners of the pan. Plus, because it’s stainless steel, it will never rust.

We recommend using grapeseed oil to season your cast-iron skillet; it has a high smoke point and a neutral flavor. However, if you don’t have or don’t want to buy grapeseed oil, other neutral oils like canola or vegetable also work.

i tried it and it was pretty hard to bite onto it but once you do it is soft on the inside and has a nice oily smell and tastes amazing

Used a grill for a long time, learned that steaks in cast iron skillet is MUCH better!!! Seasoning and maintenance are easy once you get used to the routine. Great video!!

Great advice. After seasoning my pan on top of the stove in my case, I added some unsalted butter and gave it the egg test. Worked like a charm. I want to make pancakes on mine. Actually it's an cast iron griddle that I bought at the Cracker Barrel. I think I will have pancakes again tomorrow since I screwed up today but using a little bit of oil after I season the griddle again, instead of butter so I can get a better brown. We live and learn.

Soap doesn't hurt iron or the seasoning once it's baked in. It will only remove loose material and grease.

I got that same brand of cast iron skillet from my great-grandmother when she passed a few years ago. I use it a ton, but I never checked to see if it was a quality brand or anything. Is it a good one?

Bought my first one. I just washed as suggested. Upon drying I still get "black" on the cloth when I wipe it. Is that a problem?

This skillet requires more maintenance than myself!

I tried this and when I put it in the oven it changed the rim of the cast iron a different color. What did I do wrong? I use Lodge. Is that a good cast iron?

2:10 Thanks for the good info. When I wipe out the oil after scrubbing. drying and oiling, my kitchen towel turns black. Is it ok to use my pan? I tried to scrub with salt but no use. Keep seeing the black oil residue on the kitchen towel. Am I doing wrong? Thanks.

This seems like taking the very long and difficult path to get to a simple solution. I washed mine, coated with a little oil, threw it in the oven, and boom...no problems for 2+ years.

I've already watched close to 10 videos regarding how to season an iron skillet/maintaining/cleaning and iron skillet.
And neither one has mentioned how often should the seasoning process be done on a skillet.
Every 3 to 5 months? Maybe as needed?
Just curious.
