Me, who has never, not once, crocheted in my life: *nodding along* “uh-huh, right, of course”

Honestly, pulling out the stiches is the most satisfying part of messing up a project in my opinion 😅

I love how helpful this community is. I know nothing about crocheting or knitting but everyone is giving tips and answering questions and it’s just a lovely little corner of YouTube.

Another thing is sometimes when you're new to crochet, you miss the first and last stitches. Stitch markers are your friend. I still use them and I've been crocheting for years.

My mom accidentally did that and made a candy corn blanket that we hang on our loveseat during October

Also pressure makes a difference. I would end up pulling the stitches tighter and tighter each row without realizing it, and it would warp and make it seem a bit triangular. 🙈

So i crochet a little bit, and another reason would be that you’re dropping the last stitch or adding an extra stitch at the end. especially for beginners, it’s hard to tell where the last stitch is so i recommend just counting if you’re still new because you’re likely only working on small projects anyways. when you gain more experience you’ll naturally know where the last stitch is. this is just from my personal experience because i remember trying to make scarves when i first started and it turning into a wave strip of failure. (little me was fun)

If your project is forming a triangle then it just means your missing a stitch somewhere either at the beginning or the end. You don’t have to chain 1 if you don’t want to. Just count your stitches. I personally do like to chain 1 but I also know some patterns don’t always chain 1.

I suck at crocheting, so thank you for the help!

So basically, if you didn't fully understand why it's necessary, as I didn't at first, you chain one as like an endcap for the row otherwise you turn it and crochet into the next one and accidentally end up decreasing. (Idk if I explained it well, but I tried)

The chain one at the end doesn't prevent accidental decreases, it just gives structure to the edge. If you're accidentally decreasing what's more likely is that you're not making a stitch in the last stitch of the row that can sometimes be a little hidden (especially if the pattern counts a turning chain as a stitch).

If you still experience this problem even when chaining between rows you may be missing the last stitch of each row. The last stitch of a row is usually smaller than the rest so it can be easy to miss, try counting your stitches to make sure it’s right.

Just thanks for sharing in such a sweet way! I'm a beginner, like haven't finished a project new, so I really appreciate this.

this used to happen to me ALL the time. it wasn’t that i wasn’t chaining one, but that i was missing the last stitch on each row. make sure to look closely and make sure you’re not skipping a loop.

it might also be because of missing stitches or the gauge being off. like i don't typically chain one at the beginning of my rows because i personally don't like the way it makes my edges look, but i've never had the triangle shaped problem unless either my gauge was off or i missed some stitches. i'm saying that to say that the problem may not be the way you start your rows and rather something else in the rows that came before. so, if you're a beginner or just constantly have this issue with bigger projects, make sure you use stitch markers to mark starting and ending stitches and do the pinching of the project holly had mentioned in another short to help control your gauge. (n then obviously if you're still not doing the chain one but you're counting stitches and controlling your gauge then the problem most likely is the lack of a chain one at the beginning of your rows)

I always chain 1 for SC, 2 for HDC and then 3 for DC

i’ve recently been getting into crocheting and my first “project” is a little triangle 💀

I would like to say that this only applies to rows of single crochet, as when going around in circles you do not need to chain or else you’ll get an extra stitch then needed and will become a mess :) also I think this applies to other stitches but I’m not sure-

You have saved my crochet journey. I kept having this problem repeatedly and wanting to cry because I felt so stupid not knowing what I was doing wrong. Thank you so much for this answer!
