Drinking in moderation can be the answer. I used to think that the only answer was to stop drinking completely, but realized that cutting drinking out all the way made me end up thinking about it more. Learning to drink in moderation can be the entry into complete sobriety and will allow you to be in control.

This helped me.
Compare your alcohol craving to how you control your temper.
If you can control your temper anytime you get angry then think the same way when you get a craving to drink.

I was not born drinking, and there is no benefit to drinking. I abused it for many years, hidden behind the disguise of accomplishments and financial success. All of the degrees and money in the world cannot repair relationships or your physical and mental health. I quit 8 1/2 years ago and I got everything back. I will never be so smart and experienced that I have it all figured out. I consider myself in early sobriety and will continue to learn and grow for the rest of my life. Quitting all forms of alcohol is by far the best decision I ever made in my life.

I’m a bing drinker but could get up to 2 to 3 binges per week, stopped with the program for 18 months but loved beers especially at concerts or at social events where others are partying . Its a slippery slope !

This is smart. The book Atomic Habits teaches this kind of thinking to change habits. Even a 1% improvement in behavior over time it has a snowball effect and eventually change happens exponentially. Thanks for this !

I truly believe your using alcohol, or food, gambling, whatever, your are seeking something. Dig deep and find out what and whys. You fix that and there is no addiction….

Sober me is a moderate drinker. Unfortunately, that person disappears after a couple of pints and Zed from Police Academy takes his place.

Thank you so much my internal dialogue has been trying to clarify this to me and these are my thoughts exactly with an even better perspective.

I believe the full experience of sobriety requires really filling that "positive stress" in our daily ritualistic "personal structure" of habits, engagements, activities to frankly outweigh inevitable challenges and negative stressors in life. Gradually touching on the most personal goals quite often is key, our own schedule of our own design needs to take the lead. Imperfection is totally ok, it's about gradual progress, living more of how our spirit really wants to live and how alcoholics tend to linger on throughout many conversations of genuine ideas and dreams but a lack of the deeper energy for engagement.

I think the point she doesn’t understand is that if you’re an alcoholic, which I am, you don’t wanna control your drinking, you wanna be able to control the consequences, which you can’t, I wanna get smashed every night and hope somehow I can keep my life from spiraling to shit, a delusion.

Lots of strategies, lots of rules, lots of math, pouring out beers - for me it's simpler to just say no drinking today.

Moderation is just a phase in alcoholism, wait and see, if you are an alcoholic it won't last. Been there tried that

If one can moderate, one is not an alcoholic 😅
Yes, one can create the right mindset and do activities that enrich one’s life.

I have been successful in having a glass or two of cabernet with no intention of going balls to the wall. Age and wisdom have helped along with avoiding even the slightest hangover.

If you try to do 1% better everyday does that mean in 100 days you are going to be 100% better

If you are able to moderate your drinking, you are not an alcoholic. An alcoholic cannot moderate his drinking.

I came to see if I could drink in moderation for the rest of my life. I am going to try one more time, I probably sound like an idiot but f..k it. I want to drink a 6 pack only on Saturdays, but if I can't succeed I will then stop drinking.
