I’m a cosmetic chemist and have worked in beauty for 12 years- the claims that people are bombarded with are overwhelming. One influencer says a product does something insane, like “gets rid of pores”, likely because they’re sponsored by the brand, then another influencer copies that statement and then literally thousands of others start touting that mess. And the market is just drenched in basic moisturizers with a high price point. A simple emollient for $325. Insane!! Thank you for leading people in the right direction!!

I used to spend hundreds on skin care at Sephora, and now I spend less than $50.00 on drugstore products and $20.00 prescription tretinoin, and my skin has never looked better 🙌🏻 It’s about finding the right ingredients for your issues

Creme de la Mer does nothing it promises. It feels just like Nivea in the blue metal container, which my grandmother used until she died at 95. She had beautiful skin.

This is why I use so much k-beauty. Reasonably priced and they work. I also use CeraVe and La Roche Posay.

I did a workshop with a celebrity make-up artist from LA years ago and when asked what the best moisturiser was, she named a type that was $500. When i asked was there a cheaper product that could do the same or near the same results she ignored my question 🙄
Thank you for being real ❤

I am over 70, always had a very sensitive skin. I have been using Nivea old fashioned face crème for years (cheaper blue container) My doctor nearly gave me an under 60s Flu Jab.. Thought I was about 52. Just find what suits you and use every single night. Thank you for this DrS. x

K Beauty has been such a game changer for me. Every product I use is under $20 and most under $12. The ingredients and formulas really leave western skincare in the dust imo 😅

I was watching an influencer today and when she hit the 7th serum in her skin care routine I was done! She wasn’t done yet! I just thought ridiculous, I can’t spend that time or money!

Once upon a time, way back in the 1970s, I was in advertising. They way those beautiful changes are produced is through lighting. The before picture is lit with a harsh single source light. The after with refused multi-sourse lights. Now, there are all kinds of corrections that can be made on your cellphone's photo app. We all wish aging, sun damage and fatigue weren't things we all face, but there aren't any magic ingredients. Even plastic surgery doesn't turn back the clock.

Thanks for the validation, doc! I’ve been using good, old Neutrogena moisturizer forever, & still love it…

As an older woman, I can tell you so much on the Internet is just BS. Everyone’s pictures are altered, products are hyped up. And they Photoshop products too to make them look better like shoes and clothing. Then you get it and you’re like why isn’t this cute as it was online? Just get a good basic skincare routine and stick with save your money.

I treated myself to Tatcha Dewy moisturiser last year and the packaging was beautiful. The product itself was very nice, but I honestly didn't see a difference to using my beloved Nivea moisturiser in the blue tin. I kept hold of the Tatcha packaging and it is now filled with Nivea!! I paid almost £70 on offer for Tatcha and £4.00 for Nivea and got three times as much product. I'm a 45 year old woman who has followed a strict skincare routine for over 25 years, stayed hydrated with plenty of water daily and who has worn SPF every single day since my early 20's and I have absolutely no deep wrinkles. Only very fine lines around my eyes. So I have tried many, many skincare products and I always return to Nivea as a night cream.

As per usual, all it boils down to is gaining money, greed! I totally respect you for your honesty and not being a part of a toxic society! Thank you for caring as I do as well.

Thank you!...I knew it!..I am a licensed esthetician and have tried everything under the sun! I decided not to buy ANY more trending products after being scammed out of almost $1000 (my most costly mistake ever) for a brand of products endorsed by a plastic surgeon!
Hard lesson learned!

I started using Oil of Olay moisturizer in college, simply because it had SPF 15. After that, I moved on to using whichever drug store dupe of the OoO I could find, for the same reason, and the cheaper price tag. When Eucerin introduced its daily moisturizer with SPF 30, I switched to that (haven’t found a store brand equivalent yet). I am now in my mid-50s, have not a single wrinkle, and am regularly mistaken for someone decades younger. *Cheap moisturizer is where it’s at*. Get thee some (with a good SPF, naturally).

Marlena Stell's video about the La Mer cream was a great video to break this down! It is absolutely NOT worth the $$$!

I worked as a counter manager for a luxury makeup brand starts with a C. This was the late '90s and they had an eye cream that sold at that time for $350! For some reason it had some cult following I think purely because of the brand name and the outrageous price. I actually talked women out of buying it. Most of their skin care has fragrance They even put fragrance in the eye cream at that time. I could not let women spend their hard earned money unless than a half ounce of cream for $350!! That's robbery.

My moisturizers include a big pump of La Roche Posay triple moisturizing cream at night and cerave moisturizing lotion in the morning. Both last me at least 2-3 months, are affordable, and keep my skin soft and feeling great! You don't always need expensive, just what works for your face. If expensive works for you though after trying all the other affordable things, that's ok too

Thank you for saying this. Over the years I have way overspent on moisturizers and they did nothing more than less expensive creams. My kids won’t repeat my mistakes.

La Mer comes to mind when you mention basic moisturizer that is insanely overpriced.
