I make custom knives and make the bolsters from raw bar stock in nickel silver, brass, and copper. I start with 120, then work my way up thru the grits. 240, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000.

In each stage, I wet the sandpaper, and touch the metal with a fingertip dipped in dawn dishwashing liquid. Just a dash. It lubes the metal and helps the particles flow. Rinse the sludge away between grits. You'll get that high gloss. You shouldn't skip from 240 to 2000.

Awesome! So helpful, thank you! I wouldn't rub the metal polish with my finger though especially if it has chemical ingredients. Just FYI. Be sure to use gloves or a cloth if you aren't already.

Thanks again!

Who would have thought Arnold Schwarzenegger's son would be in a military academy. Just kidding bro. Your accent reminds me of him. Thanks for the tip.

Will this Work with Gold Plated Buckles?

I never saw you use the 2000 grit sandpaper. Is that because you didn't need it to get the bright shine?

150 grit will create deep scratches that will be hard to ever get out. 2000 grit won't get any scratches out.

Does this only work on brass or any metal bag hardware?

What can I add after to prevent scratches again? I bought a beautiful brass mailbox that was pricy supposed to have lacquer to protect from scratching but while my brother installed it on my house, his shirt button hit it & scratched it quite a bit. 6:02

You skipped the part where 200 grit sandpaper was able to remove scratches from 150 grit sandpaper. It appears it was already polished before you started the polishing procedure. Thumbs down.
