I feel that if you open a tomb there are micro organism that one may not have immunities too. Especially if one is not from the area or already ill, these can be seen as a curse. Then all things that go wrong will add to the fear for those closest and the story for those farthest away.

I was gonna guess it w as just a high concentration of something like lead or mercury in the air in the tomb that killed them, but this explanation makes more sense
