I love it when Stannis asks Davos when he learnt to read, genuinely interested in a personal matter for one flickering moment. No one else in Westeros could have that affect on him, subtle as it was.

This is the scene that made me like Stannis. The fact that he's the only pretender to the throne that recognizes the true threat, and even marches to the Wall to meet it.

Smart characters are always my favourites.

I really feel bad for Stannis in Season three.  It's just one frustration after another.  First, he's still reeling over losing Blackwater.  Then his buddy shows up alive. YAY!  Then he tries to kill Melisandre. NO!  Ah, well, he's still got his girlfriend right?  Nope.  Apparently when your "fires are low" you get relegated to the friendzone.  He's still got his wife, right?  Not only is she bat-guano insane, but she knows ALL about Stannis' adultery and totally cool with it.  So Stannis has got the two women in his life talking behind his back about HIM.  For Stannis, that would be just...well, to his eyes it would be another betrayal.  He's still got his little girl, right?  Well, all she wants to talk about is her bestest friend in the whole world, the Onion Knight.  Then Gendry shows up, a rather brutal reminder that though Stannis was faithful to his wife all those years, they never had any living sons.  Robert did nothing but sleep around but still had a healthy boy.  It's just not fair.  Then he thinks, "I was a little hard on Davos and I really don't want to do anything rash.  I'll let him out.  He won't kill Melisandre.  What ELSE could he do?" Couple of episodes later... "DANG FLABBIT, DAVOS!"  Point being, the fact that Stannis hasn't taken to drink speaks strongly for his nerves.

Red Women's decision to have Davos spared kinda changed my opinion of her. It made me understand that no matter how much of a scoundrel she seemed to be, she had the right priorities in mind.
