As a fairly new quilter, I get confused from one video to the next. Some videos say “scant” and some some 1/4”. I don’t know how to measure a consistent “scant”. I know consistency is key, but I’d still like to know how to measure a scant and why. What is the purpose of a scant?

A treasure chest of useful, helpful teaching. The tip of leaving one finger off the ruler and
touch the mat was very eye opening. You also helped me realize on reading the ruler to make that 4 1/2 inch block to look at that vertical line and run the eye to the junction of the 45 degree angle and the 4 1/2 inch line. I have been struggling because I try to read that yellow line showing the 4 and a half square line. I thank you so very much. New quilter here. Have joined the quilters guild and am making first quilts for grand nephew who's 2, and Grand niece, 5 months, who live a long way away, but are coming this summer .
