My stepfather got his pelvis broke like this. He was sitting in the corner of the bench that goes all the way across the transom (the back) with several other adults. They hit a wave, got airborne then came down first on the corner where he was seated and everyone else on the bench slid into him. Crushing his pelvis. It was an agonizing recovery that took a couple of years before he was 100% again. People get on the water and don't understand how quickly things can go wrong and that they are responsible for all the lives on their vessel.

The guy that fell out, didn’t realize that he was going to be weightless once the boat started descending, and he was holding onto a flat box which was useless once he was weightless. Also, the wave pushing on the stern of the boat when it was at its peak, prevented the boat from going over backwards by adding torque which had the direct effect of separating the man from the box.
