A Quick Guide to the Dialectical Behavior Therapy STOP Skill for Emotional Regulation and Impulse Control (DBT Distress Tolerance): How to avoid impulsive decisions and harmful reactions. Do you often say or do things you regret when you feel overcome with intense emotions? Do you lose control of your behavior when you feel upset? This technique is extremely beneficial when we notice that our emotions are causing us to want to act impulsively on unhealthy behaviors. It teaches us how to calm down, self-regulate, and think clearly when we are overwhelmed or triggered in any situation. The STOP skill stands for stop, take a step back, observe, and proceed mindfully and is a method used in Dialectical Behavior Therapy founded by Marsha Linehan. When we can cultivate the ability to tolerate emotional discomfort and learn to stop impulsively reacting when we experience unpleasant emotions, we can make rational and healthy decisions about how to resolve uncomfortable situations in our life and avoid making decisions we regret.
