For me the best thing with ubuntu is, that its an awesome foundation for other distros. I really really hope that Sytem 76 is coming back with something special. Use Pop OS since 2017 on any computer i own.

I can't wait to update. Ubuntu has always been my favorite OS, and the main reason is the it's cause it's always such a solid choice. The last few years have been pretty sad though, so little progress was being made on the desktop apart from Gnome improvements, I'm so glad they are focusing more on it once again.

I think ubuntu is coming back with extremely high quality distros like the good old days. Let's go.

Ubuntu is doing a very good job when it comes to Laptop and PC support. I just wish they could support Flatpak in their store by default.

The installer have been one of the best features on Ubuntu IMO (have never been plagued by crashes, though I skipped 22.04). For me, the installer just looks like a real upgrade to the OS compared to before.

Great review! Interestingly enough, offering to update to the newest installer is the first thing Ubuntu Server offer (after language selection). Ubuntu 23.10 now uses the same installer backend and packages the installer as a snap package, which is what enables this feature, so maybe there's room for improvement in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS!

well I installed it right away, and so far had no issues, everything just worked! just a few extensions have to be updated to gnome 45.

I'm currently using Fedora with the GNOME desktop environment, but I'm considering switching to Ubuntu when the new LTS version becomes available.

Just updated to 23.10. Running on a MS Surface laptop 3 from 4 or 5 years ago, 8 core i5, Intel Iris Plus Graphics, 8GB ram. Connected to a 4k screen and I can't believe how well it runs!

While doing a basic install, I noticed two functionality regressions the new App Center introduces. The first is that it not not appear to have a way to display installed software to easily allow you to remove packages without having to search for them individually. The second is that the new App Center appears to break the ability to install downloaded .deb packages by double-clicking the package in the file manager.

Great presentation of the release 👍 Was it me or did the Manage part of App center had problems showing icons for pre-installed applications? 🙂

I use Kubuntu 22.04 LTS and I have decided to stay with this version until next spring when Kubuntu 24.04 LTS becomes available. By the way I run this on an old laptop that I purchased REFURBISHED IN 2014. Until the end of support for Windows 7, I ran in dual boot mode. Subsequently, trying to upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 lead to disaster, so I simply reinstalled the then current version of Kubuntu LTS in single boot mode and relied upon my desktop machine for using Windows 10 software.

I appreciate especially the tutorials on Snap and Flatpack and I am now looking for the appimage tutorial - My Google Chrome updates now come as Snaps and I expect that much more software from the Windows world will become available to my Kubuntu OS via these 'universal' formats when I upgrade to 24.04 LTS next spring.

Thanks Jay!.
This is the fastest that I chose to upgrade after a new release..
No fear! LOL

Strange thing though; when I started the video, I also went to download. Only the legacy installer was available... 🤔

A bit odd, but I'm going to upgrade anyway.

Looks superb!
I have a questions to Linux lover. I'm super into Linux and have been studying years (school, myself) mostly RedHat with my VM or EC2.
I'm thinking about changing my OS to Ubuntu, will there be any difficulties for common tasks?
Currently I'm using windows, and mostly I do watch YouTube or running VM for Linux study and sometimes play FIFA and that's pretty much it, maybe some documentations as well.

I've read somewhere that some power management or p-state issues on previous kernel version does the 6.5 kernel included on 23.10 fixed these.

I think i don't want to use Ubuntu that much, because of snaps and other "corporate" decisions, but if I want a proper job with Linux then I heard that I'd have to use RHEL and Ubuntu Server. But still I'd like to learn NixOS and Arch for my own usecases while RHEL would be for containers and mabye programming.
Mabye community is fearmongering about corporate distros, like media is fearmongering about things pretty insignificant.

It solves (some of) the issues I lived with in 23.04, but I wish these interim releases had more frequent updates. In terms of 6 month releases, I gotta say Fedora does it better even though I am not a fan at all. Maybe the Debian model where things are tested in a rolling environment so that they can eventually be part of the LTS version is better... About the new store: I don't know why it doesn't manage Flatpaks as well. I don't hate Snaps necessarily, but Flatpaks work better for some things and Snaps still cannot fill their gap. KDE Discover store already manages everything, from Flatpak, to Snap and Deb without many issues, but I haven't seen anyone comment on that. In the Linux world nowadays all that matters is "design", and the design looks good, so we just live with the flaws. In my opinion having yet another store creates even more fragmentation, specially since Gnome is becoming more and more tied to Flatpak. Or even better, why Ubuntu doesn't drop Gnome (who only cares and works with Fedora anyway) for Plasma?

Really awesome reviews from you, but I kinda missed the technical part of the updates(like performance and latency improvements...)
Anyway thanks for your observations and insights on this update!
