In this video you will learn how to safely pass other vehicles. We’ll go through:

-How to pass other vehicles
-Important passing & overtaking rules
-When it’s prohibited to pass
-Passing on the right
-Passing tips

Generally, we recommend you avoid passing if you can, as the maneuver will put you at considerable risk of being involved in an accident. But, For those times you do need to pass another vehicle, you’ll need to know how to complete the maneuver safely and what the passing rules are so you can stay safe.

When traveling at highway speeds you will need at least a 10-12 second gap (which is about ⅓ of a mile) in oncoming traffic to pass safely. It’s very difficult to judge the speed of oncoming vehicles from such a distance, which makes passing on highways especially dangerous.

When checking if it's safe to pass, pay special attention to oncoming vehicles, hazardous road conditions, hills and curves, intersections, and other obstructions on the road.

Never pass on a residential street or in a school zone! If a vehicle is stopped in its lane, always assume that a pedestrian is crossing, and use caution! When passing parked cars, be aware that a child may unexpectedly dash out from between them in front of you at any moment! If a truck passes you, it is common courtesy to flash your headlights 2 or 3 times to let him know when he's clear to move back into your lane. 😊

I would like to see some visuals that show how to safely pass a vehicle. It would help to see a point-of-view perspective to know what we’re supposed to see.

When he says never go over the speed limit this is wrong you will need to overtake the car with speed so you are not on the other side of the road for to long if the car you are going to overtake is doing 10km under the speed limit you will need to pass the car at least 20km faster so yes you will be going 10km over the speed limit but only until you have passed then go back to the speed limit

Informative but I would absolutely refrain from going less than or just the speed limit on a pass. Some cars go slightly below the limit which are passable and only going the speed limit on a pass will take long which is insanely risky.

Trucker tried to pass me on the left as I was turning left off the highway... Saw him in my mirror just in time and after thoroughly shitting myself I dodged him 🤣

Rule 1. If you're not passing or working to a turning lane, get out of the passing lane. If there's more than 1 lane, left is for passing, not for your driving comfort.

Need more room, that is an unsafe pass. It doesn’t matter what’s behind him, that’s no excuse, as long as it’s not an emergency vehicle with its lights going.

Notice the distance between the two vehicles in the right lane, that is done on purpose. If that vehicle in front, suddenly, slammed on his brakes, the semi recording has time to recognize, room to react and the distance to stop without rear ending him.

When the passing vehicle moves in like that he essentially cut off the semi in the right lane, causing him to have to slow down to put that safe distance between him and the guy that cut in.

All those photos, and videos you see of trucks in a rear end accident are mostly caused from following too close.
The person in front slams on brakes, the guy behind can’t stop in time… bam 💥 or in this case, the guy cuts in, the guy in front slams on brakes and now the last guy slams into him.
I try to always give at least 6 seconds.
