Dual Apple Studio Displays or One 49” G9 Ultrawide?

Last year I reviewed this 49” behemoth behind me, the Samsung G9 Neo, but before I switched to an ultrawide, I did actually use 2 Apple Thunderbolt Displays side by side. And so we come to 2022 when Apple launch the Studio Display, which features a 5K Retina HDR display, built-in camera, speakers, 600 nits brightness, A13 Bionic chip and 64Gb of Storage?

Thanks for the comparison. However "slighty lower resolution" ? You literally have 4 times more pixels with the dual Studio display setup.
As a user of a dual display setup, I would recommend you to try setting one to the center, and the other to the side rather than having a symmetrical setup with the bezels right in front of you.

I want a 49 so bad, but until anyone catches up with apple PPI, I just can’t do it. The pixels bother me so much, strain my eyes… as a creative professional. But I want the screen real estate!! Having multiple workflows open on the same project is game changing… so stuck. Don’t want to buy two Mac studio displays.. so expensive.

Higher PPI often gets ignored. Try scaling that 49" or anything with a low PPI to give you more real estate and make things a bit smaller (on a mac anyway) and wonder why you just paid a premium for this big monitor. Bought a 40" 4K and returned it. 2x27 4K (and above the two 5K is incredible) is better I think.

😃 Would love to see a 49" Apple monitor!

As a gamer, I would definitely go with the G9. I think it would be cool for Apple to make a small wireless subwoofer to add on to the Studio Display, iMac, Macbook, or just any device they sell.

The g9 is like 3 screens, i will never go back. Great review like always.

For the screen sharing, why not use the picture by picture mode, this will give you the ability to split the screen to use two inputs from the same device. I do this with my macbook on a 34 inch monitor for long demo sharing sessions. MacBook to dock, through two outputs in to monitor.

Interesting review, i think a fairer review would be dual studio displays vs g9 57” which is 8k, and priced at £2k

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the studio displays don’t do daisy chaining, right? Also, if it was me and I could afford it, I’d go 49inch (I currently have an electriQ 49 inch UWUD) with the studio display mounted above on an arm or something. Can an M1 Mac Mini power that much screen do you know? (Also contemplating getting a pen display to go below the 49 inch)

Can anyone tell me if this monitor is as bright as the Apple Display or a iMac display? I have bad vision and really need the brightness and the only thing drawing me to the Apple display is how bright it is. Other monitors claim to have outrageous nits but then never seem as bright as a Apple display.

I too have a G9 and 3 Studio displays. G9 is great for gaming but anything else Studio Display for the win!

I use both speakers in my two studio displays by setting up an aggregate device

My OG Soundsticks died two years ago. I had them with the G4 Cube. Loved them. (and miss them)

If I had the money, I'd get three Studio Displays. It would solve the looking in the middle issue, but that's insane money.

You can use all speakers at once...  launch Audio MIDI setup and click plus icon lower left on `create aggregate device`

Let's be honest, the G9 isn't built for productivity, it's a gaming monitor. There are other brands with monitors like the G9 that are built for productivity.

This comparison isn't exactly apples for apples.

exactly what i am looking for.. just got my macbookpro m1max and have return my imacpro and now using a 4k lg monitor and it seems to be not enough for what i was used before(5k high ppi).. so i am looking into the g9 or just getting 1 studio display

The share screen issue with a ultrawide is a real issue. Connected to that is the need for an external webcam. My workaround, but actually a requirement for this specific use case, is to keep my macbook always open. This gives a dedicated screen for sharing and has the built in webcam.

Great video Pete, I really want to go for a g9 57 inch, i have a gaming pc and a mac studio i will connect to the g9, can i use only 1 audio interface for both if i connect it to the monitor?

Using an iMac M1 with a studio display. It’s perfect for me and the iMac M1 was open box for $1999 - same as my height adjustable studio display. Except it came with 16GB of ram and 2TB SSD.
