The Making of Jurgen Klopp

We all know how Jurgen Klopp has turned Liverpool FC into a behemoth of a football club, and how he broke Bayern Munich’s monopoly of German football with his Borussia Dortmund team. But little is known about his origins at Mainz.

How he was thrust into a team without a manager, how he made a relegation favourite of the second tier into a Bundesliga competitor, and how he reinvented the german-footballing-style.

This is the story of Jurgen Klopp at Mainz, told by Seb Stafford-Bloor. Illustrated by Alice Devine.

As someone working for Mainz 05, I'm beyond grateful for this little tribute to Klopp and the city of Mainz. He is more than just a manager for us, he's part of the modern history of our beloved city.

When I met him California in 2016 during a training session, I told him this: 'You are the best thing to happen to Liverpool since Steven Gerrard debut'd in 1998.' He smiled. We'll be forever grateful, Jurgen :)

Klopp will go down in the history books for his accomplishments against pep’s city team. The fact he made Liverpool challengers and pushed City all the way on several occasions is immensely impressive!

Back in 2015 there were two options as to which manager Liverpool would sign, Klopp or Ancellotti.
I thought Ancellotti would be a better signing but how wrong I was, and I am glad I was proved wrong by Klopp. Now I can't imagine anyone else rather then Klopp being in the front seat. Much love ❤️

As Man Utd fan, I love Klopp. I love his style. Personality. Coaching. Use to watch Dortmund teams so attractive to watch. Always wanted him to come to Man Utd but didn't happen and will never will 😓

Jürgen Klopp is an admirable manager due to his love of the game, and not only because he enables us 'football romantics' but because he even rewards us. The man has many good quotes to his name, yet one of my favorite quotes has to be something similar to; "Whenever the team does well, they have earned the credit. Whenever the team fails, the blame is exclusively on me." That quote and philosophy shows not only maturity, but an understanding and fondness of the collective.

To anyone who enjoyed this, you should read Rafa H's biography called Klopp: Bring the noise. One of the best biographies I've ever read, can't recommend it enough

He's a fantastic manager, and he'll be beloved wherever he goes because he has a Shankly-level of understanding about how important the fans are to the game.

But I appreciate him most because he seems like a good, decent man.
