The excitement is real! Jane Austen as part of your work sounds like a dream job. I’m looking forward to checking out your Jane Austen videos during the month. Hope you have an amazing July!

I really need to get a BookTube event calendar so I can plan for these things in advance. I'm going to sneak _Northanger Abbey_ in, but otherwise I planned to much other reading. I think its great that you have worked Jane Austen into your PhD work. I do love that adaptation of _Sense and Sensibility_ .

Oh yeah; Lost in Austen was great fun. I would recommend bride and prejudice too. It is set in India and the Mrs Bennet character stays quite true because she does want marriage for all her daughters. And the Darcy character is american so his worry about his family's objections make sense since Lizzy is from a different background to him. I think it is a very good adaptation actually. Another one (which I wouldn't say is an actual adaptation to any of Austen's novels) is Austenland. Its about an american woman who goes to a country house in England where they offer the Jane Austen experience and it is great fun. It pokes a little fun at our ideas that it would be so elegant to live in such a time and the romanticism of it all. I absolutely love it, so I would strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Austen and doesn't mind watching a fun movie that isn't afraid to parody some things whilst still feeling like a storyline Austen herself would approve of.

I’m really excited that you already have your TBR up. I’ve had mine filmed since 2 days after they announced it! I’ve just been waiting to start seeing others before I upload it. 😂 Emma is my second favorite Jane Austen, as well! I wouldn’t say you’re cheating at all! You’re just being efficient.

I think I watched this a week ago, but the comment never went through! I'm so excited that you'll be taking part in Jane Austen July with us! And I think you'll absolutely love Lady Susan! You should definitely watch Love and Friendship when you finish Lady Susan. I cannot wait to hear all about Emma and music as well. I would love to see a more academic video about your PhD and Emma (if you aren't entirely sick of thinking about the topic after writing your essay.) I can't wait to go check out your Austen playlist and see all of the Austen content you have planned for the upcoming month! :)

I'm sure you will be having a lot of fun with Jane Austen July!
I don't know where Death at Pemberley would fit but I suppose it can be considered as a modern screen adaptation and I highly recommend it. I haven't read the book by PD James (apparently it's not very good) but I really enjoyed the BBC adaptation. it's a clever mix between a P&P sequel and a murder mystery.

If you're looking for a good Jane Austen retelling, "Eligible" by Curtis Sittenfeld is a good retelling of "Pride and Prejudice" where the Jane and Lizzie Bennet are in their late 30's. It is kind of large but it is very easy to read. Debra White Smith's series of retellings are also a solid choice.

Love the Austen enthusiasm! There used to be an "Austen in August" book blog thing, I participated years ago. Going to check out your playlist. I have a P&P prequel to recommend, with the disclaimer that I know the author: Follies Past by Melanie Kerr. It's about Wickham and Darcy (and Georgina), just before the Bennets came into the picture.

I would actually love to hear more about the academic writings on Jane Austen and her time that you have been reading so far. As for retellings, Joan Aiken wrote quite a few pastiche novels, e.g. "Jane Fairfax" (pastiche to Emma, of course) and "Lady Catherine's necklace" (pastiche to P&P).

Lady Susan is based on letters and the movie love and friendship .

I remember Lost in Austen! It was painfully bad and none of the characters acted the way they should have done but... now I want to rewatch it. I'd be interested in a video on academic writing on Jane Austen if you had the time to make one.

I don’t think it’s cheating at all that your research just happens to fit into the readathon! That said, I get where you’re coming from. I do put books I read for work and research on my Goodreads, but then I don’t account for articles or book chapters—not something Goodreads has options for, ha. Or I end up with a book on my “reading” shelf for 10 months because I spontaneously stuck in on there but only read a few relevant chapters from it. Ugh, now I’m realizing I need to rethink my method.
I’d LOVE to hear more about your research and about music in the 19th century, in Jane Austen’s books, etc.
For retellings, I got a chuckle out of Austenland by Shannon Hale. Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James incorporated Austen’s writing style in an interesting way. A few newer ones that I haven’t read yet: Pride by Ibi Zoboi and Unmarriagiable by Soniah Kamal.

I remembered the music in Sense and Sensibility but not Emma until you said it! Emma is actually not one of my fave Austen's, but S&S is! *gasp emoji*
Lady Susan is fun. The film adaptation is FANTASTIC--although, confusingly, they named the movie after another of J.A.'s works, Love and Friendship.
Ayesha At Last by Uzma Jalaluddin is a good Austen retelling! I just finished it and it's a Pride and Prejudice retelling/inspired story with Muslim main characters set in Canada.
YES 1995 P&P is the pinnacle of book-to-screen adaptations.
One of my favorite modern adaptations is Bride and Prejudice which is basically a P&P Bollywood movie and it is SO FUN. There's this song they do about the Mr. Collins character called "No Life Without Wife" and it is a delight.
I think it's GREAT you fit your research into this!
