Obstructive Sleep Apnea Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment | Loud Snoring During Sleep

This video is about obstructive sleep apnea. First i have discussed two related case scenarios. OSA is a respiratory disorder that is characterized by repeated episodes of prolonged upper airway obstruction during sleep, despite continued or increased respiratory effort. This results in complete or partial cessation of airflow at the nose and mouth, as well as in disturb sleep. While primary snoring is not associated with any ventilatory abnormalities. Obstructive sleep apnea may be caused by rhinitis, adenotonsillar hypertrophy, macroglossia, obesity, muscular dystrophies, hypothyroidism, or mandibular hypoplasia. Symptoms include loud frequent snoring, breathing pauses, restless sleep, abnormal sleeping positions, nocturnal diaphoresis, enuresis and difficulty in morning waking. Day time symptoms include early morning headache, sleepiness, hyponasal speech, and poor appetite. There may be irritability, depression, academic difficulties, and poor somatic growth. In this video I have discussed step-wise management of OSA which include weight control in case of obesity, positional therapy, trial of nasal corticosteroids, adenotonsillectomy, myofunctional therapy and craniofacial surgery.
