In June 2015, a shocking crime took place in Springfield, Missouri. Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, a devoted mother and caregiver to her disabled daughter, was brutally murdered in her home. Her daughter, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, and her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, were later arrested and charged with the crime.
As the investigation unfolded, a disturbing story emerged about Dee Dee's treatment of Gypsy. For years, Dee Dee had fabricated and exaggerated Gypsy's medical issues, subjecting her to unnecessary medical procedures and treatments. Gypsy was kept isolated from the outside world and had little contact with anyone outside of her mother.
It was eventually revealed that Dee Dee suffered from a rare mental illness called Munchausen syndrome by proxy, in which a caregiver intentionally causes or fabricates symptoms in someone under their care. Dee Dee's actions were driven by a desire for attention and sympathy from others, and she enjoyed the praise and admiration she received for her supposed selflessness and dedication to Gypsy's care.
Gypsy, who had been homeschooled and kept largely in the dark about the outside world, began communicating with Nicholas Godejohn, a man she met on a dating website. The two developed a romantic relationship and plotted to escape Dee Dee's abuse and control.
On the night of the murder, Nicholas entered Dee Dee's bedroom and stabbed her to death while Gypsy waited in the bathroom. The couple fled the scene and were later caught by police in Wisconsin.
During their trial, Gypsy and Nicholas claimed that they had acted in self-defense and that Dee Dee's abuse had driven them to murder. However, the prosecution argued that the murder was premeditated and that Gypsy and Nicholas had planned it together.
Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Nicholas was found guilty of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. #truecrime
