In Lawrence, a city north of Boston, Massachusetts, a man suffers a terrible medical accident resulting in his death. He was on in home dialysis when it failed, and he panicked when it did. Shooting up out of bed he sprayed blood and tracked it through the whole house. His wife who was home at the time witnessed everything. There was blood everywhere; on every object, wall, floor, door, and piece of furniture.

Biohazard pro was called out on a late and fridgid January evening in New England, for emergency trauma and death cleanup services. When we arrived Family members and friends were actually inside retrieving personal belongings while exposing themselves to bloodborne pathogens without protection. We politely informed them that it was an extremely bad idea to be inside the home until the blood was all removed.

The homeowners insurance covered the full cost of their biohazard remediation claim, which alleviated the insured from having to pay for such expensive cleaning services.

To explain what happened: with dialysis, a large needle/catheter is placed into a large vein. If a person is panics, or yanks out that catheter for any reason, the vein is open and you will bleed out unless immediate care is taken to stop the bleeding. The large veins cannot vasoconstrict like the smaller ones, they need extended firm pressure.

As soon as you said the poor man was a dialysis patient, I almost started to cry. I’ve been a nurse for 20 years and have met lots of dialysis patients, it’s a rough life in so many ways. I can’t even imagine how terrified this man was. My heart goes out to him and his family, may he RIP.

This is such a sad, tragic death. I’m sure he and his wife were terrified while this was happening. She can never get him back, but thanks to you guys, she won’t have the horrific burden of cleaning up all that blood. Good job guys! It looks beautiful and clean and she can go back home without having to see a single drop of his blood anywhere!

The fact that he was a dialysis patient hits so close to home. I lost my mum a few months ago and she struggled for years with renal failure amongst heart and lung problems caused by her diabetes. 3/5 working days she’s sat in the hospital hooked up to a machine for four hours through the fistula in her arm. She wouldn’t come home til late most nights from hospital because she was Profusely bleeding after being taken off dialysis and it took a while to stop it. Not to mention The illness and this process took SO MUCH out of her, and that on top of working 40 hours a week meant she was absolutely exhausted and drained thus she would just sleep all weekend to recoup her energy. It’s not really a life and my heart truly breaks for this man who was going through the same thing she did or anyone else for that matter. At least he is now in peace and no longer suffering 💓

My grandmother was on dialysis for about a year before she died. I was fifteen at the time and I helped when she started doing it at home. It was heartbreaking enough, but I can't imagine having to deal with something like this. I hope his wife is okay.
My Nanna died in her bed at home in my arms, so luckily it was peaceful.

the question is if dialysis has a risk of having this kind of situation, why letting people having dialysis at home by themselves ?

He must have been terrified in his last moments and just running around in a panic. His family will never get those images out of their heads. Hope they are doing okay.

Oh god, dialysis is so terrifying. My grandpa’s kidneys failed and he had to go through dialysis every three days, with dealing with the after effects and pain of the process for the next two days. He lived in constant pain. He told my dad that he didn’t want to live like that anymore. He pulled the plug on himself. I never met my grandfather, and I’m always so sad when I think of it.
