i love how at no point does the game ever come out and tell you what this is. if you've never read the divine comedy, you'll have no idea what the trees are meant to be.

It’s unsurprising how deeply mournful this rendition of the suicide forest is.

I’m proud how what was once considered a just punishment by holymen has, by our time, come to be considered a horrifically unfair fate only a savage, inhumanly cruel creature like Hell would derive any satisfaction from inflicting.

Longing for a better past is a struggle we all live with, but it’s easy to forget just how much casual cruelty there was in times gone by.

Had a realization about this level today.

So, we know Ultrakill is partially based off of Dante's Inferno, what with how the layers are structured and all. In the original poem, in the 7th layer, people who inflict violence unto themselves via suicide are turned into trees... and you know what's very prominent in 7-3?

Trees of sickly white bones that feed on blood.

But that's not the half of it. The level title, "No Sound, No Memory" reflects the state that these transformed humans are stuck in. They make no sound, as they have no mouth, and no memory, as theyve lost their minds.

...I get that this layer is the Violence layer and all, but way to remind me how fucking brutal this game is.

you know, for 7-3 starting off with the suicide forest (or whatever you want to call it) being obviously morbid, it has one of the most calming songs I think I've ever heard out of this entire game imo

A friend of mine took their own life on New Year’s Eve, only a few days ago. When I got the call from a mutual friend of ours, I was playing this level. Fate has a cruel sense of humor.

Fun fact: the tree canopy piercing through the tormented soul is actually a subtle reference to how it feels to be Marked for Death on Violent difficulty.

In Dantes Inferno, people who kill themselves are turned into trees and bushes, where any amount of damage to them causes intense pain.

Edit: another quick note, it might have also taken reference from the phrase "Hurt people hurt people" which has some interesting implications

The whole Violence layer feels less like the punishment for violent acts, but more like a twisted, sick love letter to what violence leaves behind.

I was sure Hakita would hit us hard with the ring of violence against self, but I didn't expect him to hit us with the empire state building right in the feels.

I was quite surprised to see 7-3 suddenly become a horror game out of nowhere at the start. I hated that Something Wicked sound effect at the door too, this level was great. The layer in general was too, can't wait to see what's cookin' for Fraud and Treachery.

I honestly thought this level would have the whisper and the "Something Wicked this way comes" text box when I was running through the map, not seeing it made the level even more terrifying. The Red Light that comes down like lightning was such a beautiful touch. If we don't count the bosses this may be my favourite level in the game, I need recency bias to leave to decide that, because Ship of Fools, and Cries for the Weeper are currently up there fighting for number 1 but now I have a new contender

My absolute favorite part about this song is that despite being used in both combat and non-combat situations, it never changes. There's no calm loop, there's no combat loop, there just is, much like how these people are now forced to live the rest of eternity as gnarled trees, with no ability to change or act. What a hauntingly somber detail.

For anyone who doesn't get the heavy emphasis on the trees: They're people. In the Divine Comedy, Dante, while in his guided path through the Violence layer, finds himself in the Violence Forest, a forest made for the sinners there, where they're forced into eternal pain and lament over their sins, as trees.

Man, as someone struggling with.... The topic of this level this hits as hard as a truck, bravo Hakita, you've really transmitted the feeling of weakness and despair someone feels before ending their own lives
