What happens when corporations run the country and not the people.

As a retired locomotive engineer, at least she had correct information on regarding to the "hotbox" detectors. She she didn't mention that the crews are notified by a radio message from the detector to the train crew. Also the detectors have axle counters to give the train crew the exact number of wheel axles from the head end.The detectors have heat sensors which detects the defects!

This seems like it’s gonna be a much smaller-scale version of Chernobyl.
Especially since our government is more worried about balloons than this.

Why hasn't this been talked about more?

This is what happens when railroads forsake safety in lieu of profits.

It's alright.. All the local fish in the river are dead. Our experts from the EPA say the water is still safe and effective to drink.

As a former locomotive engineer, I sure hope that crew was not asleep or distracted in any way that would cause them to not hear the detector's defect message. Also, it is nice to hear a reporter who actually knows what she is talking about. Usually when something railroad-related makes the news, there is a lot of false or misleading information.

how about reporting on the chemicals released into area?

There have been articles in the past few years about how terrible railway maintenance is in the US, with many interviews with former + current railroad workers saying that the companies are cheapening out as much as they can. Thankfully the railway companies lobby every elected official they can so reforms can't happen!

Satellite and the "defectdetector" site show that the hotbox and dragging equipment detector is 1 mile *after* the train passed the Butech Bliss camera, just west of South Lincoln Avenue. Visible on streetview from South Lincoln, also clearly visible on streetview from Snyder Road. A small silver box on the south side of the tracks, with sensors next to the rails by each track. Raises big questions, but NTSB should be able to clear this up easily. All radio traffic is recorded. FEMA refusing to help is another issue.

This was 3 blocks from my house. I posted this video to my personal fb account last Friday. This the exact question I've been trying to have answered. No one has answer's.

NORFOLK SOUTHERN NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. That whole area is gonna see an increase of brain, liver, and lung cancer. Every single person effected needs to sue tf out of them and see no medical bills. Their negligence is disgusting and evil.

THIS TRAIN WAS ON FIRE AS IT PASSED WITHIN TWO HUNDRED YARDS OF MY HOUSE.?I live about two miles down the tracks from where this camera is. I see rusting ancient rail cars passing by every day, i am not at all surprised by this, it is only a couple of years ago that there was a derailment right by this camera . This railroad is a disaster waiting to happen every single day.

The crew was made aware when the derailment occurred and the train went into emergency. And the detectors where I work do not announce defects anymore, they give the info to the dispatcher and they have to relay it to us.

The question is where is the preceding trackside detector and what did it say.

The investigation needs to look at the corporate side and not just investigating the crew. Crews have already been sounding the alarm about the issues of Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR) and the many other corporate side problems they deal with daily. It’s unfortunately far to often that crews take the fall for faults that really the management and corporate side should take the brunt of. They are the ones that are enforcing unsafe operations and skimping on maintenance all to save a buck to boost profits; profits of which crew rarely get to enjoy for all the hard work they do. Railroading is a great concept at its basic form, but railroad’s corporate side needs to be held accountable and made to change their practices that are only to the benefit of themselves and shareholders at the expense of their workers, customers, overall safety, the public, and the environment. The risks and ultimate costs far outweigh the profit, but don’t blame the crew blame unchecked greedy corporations. Otherwise we’ll continue seeing these kinds of catastrophic failures that can have similar devastating consequences.

This is about the best report I've heard regarding the probable cause of this disaster. I also appreciate two locomotive engineers in the comments below pretty well verifying what's in this report. Lastly, like the locomotive engineers said, it's so refreshing to see a reporter who actually knows what she's talking about. Hats of to this woman!!
