Stages like this is why we watch the TdF. And the drama surely isn’t done yet.

Gotta respect Roglic staying in this tour for the team despite the immense pain he's dealing with. Despite being dropped before the last climb, he was instrumental for Jumbo today.

this is going to be studied as a textbook example of how to beat a stronger rider when you have the stronger team. Everything from the Van Aert satellite breakaway from km 0 to the relentless one/two attacking at the bottom of the Galibier. Even Van Aert falling back during the Galibier decent to pick up Roglic so he could help with the final climb. What a master piece!

I think that Jumbo played this stage to perfection. I remember the two previous years, they were trying to wear down Pogačar by riding a hard but steady pace almost throughout all of the mountain stages, no matter how hot the day was, or how high up in the mountains they were. And back then, Pogačar also didn't have a lot of teammates around him, but he could keep up with that steady pace. I think they finally learned from their mistakes, and they tried a completely different strategy this time around. These attacks came early, and came hard, and just kept on coming! They really wore him down, and this was the perfect stage to execute such an attack, and Jumbo really couldn't have played it better!

Something to consider: The fact that WvA is sitting, basically waiting on the other side of the summit put Pogi in a position of threat. If He and Jonas are leading on the road, there is no worry about Jonas attacking because as long as he rides his own pace and stays close, he will close him on the decent. Whereas with WvA waiting there, he feels like he has to ride hard to prevent attacks because even a 10 second gap could turn into a minute+ if Wout is there to power Jonas down the hill.

Which is a genius bit of tactics, because if Jonas DOES feel like he can crack Pogi, then Wout is there to take him to the next climb with an even bigger gap, and in that case perhaps even pace him for the first k or so, but even when Jonas DIDN'T attack it still puts Pogi under immense pressure.

/edit: You actually talked about this 1 second after I paused to make this comment. :P

@Lanterne Rouge - I just caught up on today - eurosport, gcn, TdF itself, then your recap dropped and it is, as usual, head and shoulders above the rest. How you fit so much high quality information into an 8 minute video; its genius talent you have, lad... Chapeau

TJV has been building up to this, what an epic stunner of a TDF stage. Jonas and Nairo were so strong. Shout out to Geraint Thomas who is still in the GC contention.

over the last 24 hours i think i became a bit more of a pogacar fan.
first everyone else complains that the police should have done more after climate activists delay the race for a few minutes, pogacar takes it with a smile and calls it a fun experience. then he looks like he's actually enjoying himself when he makes jokes at the camera while under pressure from all sides. then he still takes the time to come over and congratulate vingegaard after a stage where he cracked completely, and he's bloody smiling genuinely while doing it...
AND to top it all off, he announces publicly that he's gonna attack tomorrow.
hats off for pogacar, he's shown himself to be a proper sportsman today!

Pog expended unfathomable amounts of energy the whole stage.... and discovered that even his energy wasn't limitless.

If Pogi wins at the end, this will remain one of the highlights of a Tour we haven't seen since the Dark Ages. If he doesn't it will only make him better next year. We can only speculate what this Tour might have looked like with a healthy Roglič.

That was a pure tactical racing brilliance by JV today. It’s crazy to think it took the entire team pummelling Pog to make him lose 3 minutes.

One of the most exciting stages I've seen at the Tour. TJV were always going to take multiple attacks to Pogačar, and the contributions of Van Aert, Benoot, Kruijswijk and Laporte at various points should not be dismissed. A very different (thankfully) strategy to the old Team Sky approach of closing down attacks incrementally. Primoz Roglič was astounding and selfless. Nairo Quintana was aware that Barguil was suffering and proved right to attack. Bardet and Thomas showed their experience by challenging without going into the red, but Vingegaard's solo was a ride for the ages. Chapeau!

I simply ❤️❤️❤️ your commentaries. Especially you filling the gap as to what the riders would think or converse with his team is brilliant. Thank you!! Simply the best.

After having done 6.5 WOW!/kg for over two hours, Lanterne Rouge needed a bit of rest before making this video.
