USDA THE GREAT NUTRITION DEBATE RE:

Bananiac's response video to "The Great Nutrition Debate" that was sponsored by the USDA back in February 24, 2000. The debate features speakers (from left to right) such as Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Robert Atkins, Dr. Barry Sears, Dr. Denise E. Bruner, Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr.Morrison C. Bethea, Dr. Keith T. Ayoob, and a small presentation by Dr. Eric Westman.

I thought the debate was very spirited and entertaining but did not find the low-carb argument very convincing or backed up with scientific evidence published in peer-reviewed journals. Their point that carbs cause too much insulin to be produce is hypocritical since animal based foods cause an even HIGHER production of the hormone to be produced. Eating lots of cholesterol and saturated fat AKA meat and dairy has been shown to cause heart disease. Research is ALSO showing that eating a plant-based diet can PREVENT & REVERSE heart disease even in it's later stages. One thing most people can agree with is eating less processed carbs and more fruits and vegetables ;)

The three fundamentals for sustaining a long and healthy life is getting enough water, sugar, and sleep DAILY! Once that is established, getting some sunshine and sport during the week will make you go even further. A plant-based diet consisting of at least 80% of calories from carbohydrates will give you the edge you need to reach your potential. Go Vegan; for the people, for the animals, for the planet.

No. I will judge the paleo diet how everyone takes supplements to rebound their glucose deficiencies and their protein powders because no one can ever seem to manage to get enough protein.

The fact of the matter is meat, fish, dairy, eggs, and now caffeine is shown to cause heart disease and damage to the delicate endothelial cells in the arteries, as well as, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, etc. Do you want me to keep going?

Can you please tell me what happens from eating plants?

Nice video ;)
It's so sad though that these people don't care about people's health and only want money. Also, they keep saying refined sugar and grains is bad. TBH, I disagree. I personally enjoy white rice as I've noticed it digests better for me, and i also love sugary condiments like jam and bbq sauce, whatnot. As long as you're getting enough nutrients form fruits&veggies, refined carbs shouldn't be a problem. Meat&Dairy is.

McDougall, while giving a lecture about 1 year after this debate, he had got the idea before going into the debate to say to Dr. Atkins, "If your diet is so easy to follow, okay fatso. Why don't you stand up and take off your jacket then?" Unfortunately, his wife Mary talked him out of it.

McDougall said Atkins was at least 60 lbs. overweight, and from the video above he sure looks. For his 6 foot frame, I'd say he weighs around 260-270 lbs. He's not a very good spokesman for his own diet.

Excellent video. The vegan doctors looked far healthier. Dr. Adkins was very overweight.

Do not agree with bananiac. What is your credentials? Irregardless of your opinion high protein/fat or high carb, what are your credentials?

Thank you though for the link to the debate.

Plant-based doctors always look soooo much healthier and vibrant, but that's a subjective statement. I wish these doctors would get physicals (though I realize this is over a decade old...) and share the results (i.e. blood pressure, blood test results). Then maybe we could examine that, huh?

I agree they do look better. You should ask them that if you are really interested. It's a good curiosity to have BUT the only blood results that matter are your own. I suggest getting blood results done every 6 months (or every 3 if you are that worried). In the short term things might look kinda funny but when you give it time things get so much better long term.

Lots of bias against Atkins. No understanding of how the low carb works. There is no place for carbs in the human diet, this has been a major cause of diabetes.

I thought that by this time we understand cholesterol in the arteries is not caused by the cholesterol in the diet but is rather the body's attempt to repair arterial inflammation (caused by a high carb diet, rancid vegetable oils, etc.)
